It’s only a short trip from the Welsh mainland over the Menai Strait to this pretty one bedroom holiday cottage near Amlwch on Anglesey, but you’ll feel a million miles away from the daily grind as soon as you make the crossing over the Menai bridge. This wonderful North Wales island is the ideal romantic getaway.

The cottage is surrounded by open countryside, just a short distance from Anglesey’s north east coast between Llaneilian and Amlwch. The coastline here is magnificent, with some lovely little beaches, rocky headlands and bays to explore. The nearby Porth Eilian is one of our favourites - on a clear day you can see as far as the Isle of Man.

The old harbour town of Amlwch is a 15-minute walk from the cottage, and it’s an interesting place to wander around, with its roots anchored firmly in maritime history.

Anglesey boasts 125 miles of stunning coastal path, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The coastline here is great for wildlife watching, with regular sightings of grey seals (in the autumn) and bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoise (usually in summer). Look out for unusual seabirds too, including choughs and puffins. We recommend that you bring binoculars.

You can’t really come to Anglesey for a romantic break without a day out at Newborough. This is one of our favourite places in the world – where pine forests roll down to enormous sandy dunes, a shallow sandy beach and the tiny – and uber romantic – Llanddwyn Island. Legend has it that in the 5th century, Llanddwyn was home to Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Now it is home to a beautiful Celtic cross, a lighthouse, wild ponies and the most spectacular mountain views. Seal sightings here are common. And look out for red squirrels too. You can walk to the island at low tide.

Other great beaches to explore near this pretty one bedroom holiday cottage near Amlwch on Anglesey include Red Wharf Bay (there’s a fab gastro pub called The Ship Inn on the beach here), Lligwy, Cemaes Bay, Bull Bay, Trearddur Bay and Rhoscolyn, with its rocky headland and many secret beaches.

There are plenty of towns and seaside villages worth visiting on Anglesey too. Head to Beaumaris for Georgian elegance, nice boutiques, galleries, gift shops and stunning views across the Menai Strait to the Snowdonia mountains (top tip is for afternoon tea at the reassuringly old fashioned Bulkeley Arms Hotel – make sure you sit in the drawing room at the back of the hotel to sup your tea with spectacular mountain views). Go south west to Rhosneigr if you like the sound of a surfer’s paradise, with laid back cafés, bars, a surf school and fantastic sandy beach.

There are loads of fantastic places to eat on Angelsey, from fine dining at the award-winning Bull in Beaumaris, to rustic chic at The Marram Grass near Newborough, which is run by Great British Menu chef Ellis Barrie and his brother Liam. Other fab places to look out for include Dylan’s at Menai Bridge, The White Eagle at Rhoscolyn, The Lobster Pot at Church Bay, and Ann’s Pantry for tea and cakes on the north east coast at Moelfre.

Anglesey is packed full of Welsh culture and history. If you want a very pleasant introduction, head to the small museum and gallery at Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni. Look out for paintings by the late Anglesey artist Kyffin Williams, who captures the character of the North Wales landscapes and people so beautifully.
