Romantic One Bedroom Cottage In The Hills Above Dolgellau | Deer-Park-Lodge

A beautiful, romantic one bedroom cottage in the hills above Dolgellau, Deer Park Lodge is a fairytale property that shouldn't be missed. The building is an entrance lodge to the ancient deer park of the Nannau Estate in Dolgellau.

The stunning stone lodge's entrance porch opens into an open plan, one up one down layout which is bright and spacious. The ground floor space is tastefully decorated in soft and warm shades, with traditional furnishings which complement the history of the building. The floor is laid with large grey quarry tiles throughout, with a rug placed centrally in front of an inviting roaring log burner. A cosy armchair and leather sofa complete the lounge area, with a beautiful chest utilised as a side table and a Welsh dresser placed in the corner. Windows to three aspects of the room, as well as the large glass panelled door, flood the space with light and provide countryside views all around.

The small but well equipped kitchen area provides ample cooking space for two. Farmhouse style wooden units, finished in grey, surround a traditional white Belfast sink and modern built in oven and grill. A farmhouse dining table, perfect for two, is located in the corner of the room.

Upstairs, the romantic one bedroom cottage in the hills above Dolgellau is equally as impressive. The beautifully designed bedroom area has high ceilings which make it feel large and spacious. A large custom designed, gorgeous wooden bed unit, complete with built in side tables, provides a stunning feature in the middle of the space. This is complimented by a chunky farmhouse chest of drawers and side chairs. A wooden shelving unit packed full of books and cast iron style radiators finish off the space beautifully, and all fixtures and fittings are of high quality and specification. The bedroom area has windows to three aspects, with outstanding views across the surrounding area.

An en suite shower room is separated from the bedroom by a large sliding wooden stable door. The en suite has a large shower cubicle with rain forest shower head and a smaller multi purpose hand held head, with large grey tiles to compliment the flooring downstairs. The remainder of the shower room fittings are of a traditional style, in keeping with the history of the building.

Location

This romantic one bedroom cottage in the hills above Dolgellau is accessed via a long private drive, leading to the magical and secluded location. Surrounded by woodland on the Nannau Estate, three miles north of Dolgellau, the lodge has a long history and once formed the south entrance of the Nannau Deer Park. The elevated location provides fantastic views over the market town of Dolgellau and further south towards Cader Idris, one of the stunning peaks of southern Eryri (Snowdonia). This remote location is perfect for couples who want to escape life's busy moments, embrace the peace and tranquility of this stunning location and enjoy quiet country walks.

There are several beautiful walking routes in the surrounding area, including some providing spectacular scenery on the Nannau Estate. The circular three mile Nannau Deer Park walk passes by the cottage and takes in views of the other stunning and historical buildings of the estate. Nearby, the Precipice Walk is a two mile circular walk which offers panoramic views of the Mawddach River valley and the mountains of Eryri beyond. There's also the opportunity to explore the area surrounding Llyn Cynnwch.

The market town of Dolgellau is located a short drive from the property , and the coastal town of Barmouth with its large expanse of golden sand beach can be reached within thirty minutes by car. Heading north east, Llyn Tegid in Bala is a popular destination that can be reached within half an hour, and to the north Coed-y-Brenin Forest Park is a great destination for hikers and mountain bikers. Whether you're looking for adventure, or a relaxing break away from it all, Deer Park Lodge is the perfect destination.

We had an amazing stay at Deer Park Lodge. The lodge itself is beautiful, clean and in the most perfect setting. There are some great walks close by and maps in the lodge to help you with these. The views are by far the best we have ever seen from a holiday let, perfect to wake up to and so lovely we didn’t want to leave.
Dioni staff were really helpful when I was trying to choose where to stay and quick to respond to queries.
We will most definitely be returning to this wonderful place.

What a fantastic place, and an absolute credit to the owner. We stayed for three nights, but really should have booked longer. The cottage is off the beaten track, amongst the hills and forests above Dolgellau, and very quiet. The views are magnificent.
We found the cottage to be of very high standard, and wanted for nothing. No television was a bonus for us, too!
Dioni were easy to book through, too, and kept us updated with directions etc.
We will be looking to book here again in the not too distant future……..but for longer!

What a wonderful retreat, we had a great relaxing weekend, perfect for the dogs to. Directions From Dolgellau perfect as Sat Nav was a bit random. Walked to the Precipice Walk from lodge and back, weather was a bit rotten, but as they say no such thing as bad weather just bad choice of clothes. The Lodge is done up to a very high standard and could easily stayed a week rather than a few days. Knowing the area fairly well we had decided on what walks to do and for a long weekend we found it easy to unwind straight away, we will hope to return at some point so I will keep an eye out for dates that suit. Who need a Television in such a beautiful setting and building. If you Need To Chill then no better place.

Lovely little cottage. Quite loud and a little echoey as there are no downstairs curtains- however this is personal preference. Don’t forget your hairdryer – I could not find one. Quality was high for linen and towels. Isolated yet not that far from Dolgellau. We hope to return to this little gem.

An excellent, very comfortable, and warm cottage. We were there on a quite chilly but gorgeous week in January. Loved the location and views south over Cadair Idris. Great to wake up to the mountains looking out from the bedroom window and to take the dogs for their early morning walk in the adjacent Deer Park (generally sheep around, so they had to be on a lead at all times). The Lodge has been very tastefully renovated (it would have been good to see some ‘before and after’ photos) and the standard of paintwork was remarkable. We didn’t miss the TV, but were appreciative of the excellent WIFI for the long January evenings. The portable ‘dog stair gate’ was very helpful in keeping our dogs from visiting us upstairs at night. The only minor comment regarding changes would be as to whether the frying pan could be swapped for one slightly larger. The one currently in the Lodge is small ,even for just two people. We have been regular visitors to Hywel Sele Lodge at the other end of the Deer park (and will continue to stay there) but it is lovely to now have Deer Park Lodge as an alternative option. Highly recommended.

This is a delightful, well appointed property. Tastefully furnished and beautifully restored, the two rooms are spacious and comfortable. The views from all the windows are, of course, breathtaking, as is the situation overlooking Cader Idris. I would add the following information for future guests. Firstly, if you are arriving from the Midlands, or from anywhere really, be sure to find Dolgellau library, as the turning for the road to the lodge is directly opposite. We came off the road from Welshpool to Dolgellau too soon and got lost. Secondly, the sign for Deer Park Lodge can’t be easily seen at night, and only with some difficulty during the day. It is very small. Perhaps an arrow pointing up the drive would be a good idea. Thirdly the four figure key safe code given to us was incorrect. The safe only takes three figures. The caretaker told us that information. Fourthly, a bath mat would be useful as the shower is powerful and can wet the bathroom floor. Fifthly, we had to buy ourselves a new frying pan as the one provided was much too small; because of Covid and Christmas, we brought all our food with us and did a lot of cooking. Lastly, a small freezer and a washing machine would be useful for guests who stay for longer periods. It didn’t matter so much for us because we were only there for 7 nights, but it would be more of an issue for longer holidays. It’s 47 minutes very pleasant walk into Dolgellau and slightly more back as it’s uphill! Highly recommended.

We had a really lovely few days at the Lodge which whilst being snug and cosy, is large enough for two people to spread out comfortably. The location is perfect, completely on its own on the edge of woodland, with stunning mountain views and great walks from the door but just a short drive to Dolgellau. We were lucky to have the full glory of trees in their autumn colours but every season will have something to offer. A special place to fully unwind and ‘get away from it all’.
(We would recommend buying firewood from Wynnstay on the Bala Road if you need any, good quality and reasonably priced!)
