Large Four Bedroom Cottage On Offas Dyke Near Hay On Wye | Derw-Offa

This large four bedroom cottage on Offa’s Dyke near Hay on Wye offers luxury accommodation with bags of space and character. It sleeps up to eight guests and two well behaved pets – perfect for a family break or a getaway with a group of friends.

The cottage dates back to the 16th century, and has been carefully restored to preserve its character and history. Exposed beams, oak floors, and oiled wooden doors give the place a really lovely warm earthy feel. We love the attention to detail throughout: everything has been done to the highest quality and craftsmanship.

Despite its generous size, the cottage feels extremely cosy and restful. The ground floor offers two very comfortable sitting rooms, both of which come with inglenook fireplaces, wood burning stoves and a good supply of logs.

There is a large farmhouse style kitchen diner with a rather wonderful Rayburn as well as an electric oven and hob. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, with plenty of space for sociable cooking and entertaining.

There is a separate utility room, with microwave, washing machine and fridge freezer. There is a downstairs shower room and loo off the utility area.

Upstairs, there are four large bedrooms with a flexible accommodation option. Two of these rooms are kingsize doubles. There is one twin bedroom, and then one zip and link bedroom which can be made up as a third kingsize double or as a second twin bedroom.

There is one large family bathroom upstairs with a bath, shower and heated towel rail. As per above, the second loo and shower room is downstairs. Both of these bathrooms are really beautifully finished.

Outside, there is a large, well-maintained lawned garden, with patio area, bbq and dining area. There are plenty of little paths and corners to explore, with mature shrubs and trees dotted around – a great garden for a game of hide and seek.

There is a covered pond in the garden, with a stream to the side and bottom of the property. Doggie guests should be kept on the lead due to sheep grazing in adjoining fields.

There is plenty of parking space on the private drive of this large four bedroom cottage on Offa’s Dyke near Hay on Wye, with space for up to six cars.

Location

A former county inn, the cottage sits on the England / Wales border and is perfectly placed for exploring Herefordshire, the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacon National Park.

You’ll find it in the small village of Newchurch, around seven miles from Hay on Wye. Hay is well known for its many book and antique shops, and the Hay Festival which draws art and literature fans from all over the world for an annual event every spring.

Clawydd Offa – or Offa’s Dyke Path – passes right by the front door. Offa’s Dyke is a man-made fortification which follows the Welsh border from Chepstow in the south to Prestatyn in the north. It was built by the Mercian King Offa in the 8th century and is now a spectacular walking trail.

The cottage is ideal for keen walkers as it sits in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by rolling countryside, forests, rivers and valleys. Walking should come with its rewards, and you might be pleased to know that you’ll find plenty of country pubs and nice places to eat nearby.

As well as very pleasant walking, this peaceful, rural part of Wales is excellent biking and horse riding country. There are dozens of off-road bridleways and quiet country lanes to explore.

If you are coming to holiday near Hay on Wye, you shouldn’t miss its market, which has been trading for over 700 years. Market days are Thursday and Saturday, and you’ll find an assortment of treasures including delicious local produce, artisan breads and cheeses.

The cottage is around three miles from the nearest pub, and seven miles to the nearest shops and restaurants at Hay.

We absolutely loved our weekend break at this cottage – it’s spacious and equipped with everything we could have wanted. The location was superb – sitting in the garden eating lunch with the sound of the stream, birds and sheep was one of the highlights. Really good location for accessing plenty of local attractions and the host was great at giving us info and making sure we had everything we needed. We are already trying to find a date we can return in 2025, but for longer next time!

We came with our family to spend the holidays at this beautiful holiday home, we couldn’t have asked for better. Dianne and Andrew were amazingly accommodating hosts making sure we had everything we could possibly need. The cottage is well looked after and perfectly clean with an added bonus of beautifully kept gardens and fabulous walks right from the house.

We had a really wonderful stay at Derw-Offa! Beautiful location right on Offa\’s Dyke footpath; very comfortable, well-equipped and clean; and Diane and Andrew were so kind and such hospitable hosts. The walking and bird-watching was fantastic as was browsing in Hay-on Wye – not just for books either! We highly recommend taking to opportunity to holiday here.

Wow! What a beautiful cottage. We were a party of walkers that get together for a long weekend every year. Perfectly placed on the Offa’s dyke path, meant that we parked our cars in the massive parking area, and they stayed there all weekend. The stunning cottage had absolutely everything we needed, from lovely big saucepans to super spacious bathrooms, soft fluffy towels, and beds that were just the best we have ever slept in. Although we spent most of our time between the beautiful gardens and sitting around the big kitchen table, there were two lovely comfortable sitting rooms, so it’s very spacious. Dianne popped around to make sure we had everything we needed, and left us a lovely welcome hamper. Would we return? 💯 yes, thank you so much for your hospitality. Martin, Angela, and friends

We had a wonderful family holiday. The cottage is lovely, well equipped and clean. There was a lovely welcome pack including a homemade cake and the log burner was lit making it very cosy when we arrived. Dianne was very welcoming. Checking we had everything we needed. It is a shame that the living room with the TV and log burner only has 4 chairs, and we were 6 adults staying. Otherwise absolutely perfect stay.
