Pretty Holiday Cottage Near Llanberis | Mel-Y-Beren

Near SnowdonReal Fire

Mel Y Beren is a pretty three bedroom holiday cottage near Llanberis. This three story, white washed stone cottage is set in the middle of the beautiful Snowdonia landscape. Slightly off the beaten track, it has everything needed for a wonderful country escape. Beautiful views, surrounded by lush green mountains, far from the madding crowd, log fires, no neighbours, lots of space and plenty of fresh, fresh air.

Just on the outskirts of Llanberis, you are well positioned to take advantage of many of Snowdonia’s star attractions; climbing Snowdon being one of them. But only a 15 minute drive form the larger towns of Bangor and Caernarfon means that you have easy access to everything you need whilst still being able to enjoy that element of solitude and escapism that being only in the middle of the Snowdonia mountains can offer.

As you come into the cottage through the front door, you enter straight into the sitting room. A nice light and airy room, big comfy sofas and the all essential log fire to complete the country retreat feel. Leading directly from the sitting room is the L-shaped kitchen dinner.

At one end of the L-shape is a seating area with two armchairs and a traditional welsh dresser - this is a great place to sit with a glass of wine in the evening or a coffee in the morning away from the larger group. The kitchen is modern with white, wooden effect units against a grey workshop. In terms of appliances, there is everything you need to make the most of your stay here and cook up a storm for the group. The dining section is at the other end of the L-shape where you will find a large wooden table, 2 benches and 2 chairs so that the whole group can come together to enjoy those meals in the evenings.

Up the stairs to the first floor, there are 3 bedrooms. Two double and one twin. Carpets throughout, it has a very cosy feel upstairs and all the bedrooms benefit from wrought iron beds, light coloured furniture set against lovely bed linen and soft furnishings. Needless to say, there are some pretty amazing views of the mountains to be had from this floor. Just the one bathroom in this property but it’s nice and spacious. It has the added luxury of a free standing bath as well as the usual shower, WC and washbasin - all beautifully finished with modern appliances.

The rear of the garden is accessed by a gentle sloping path with steps on one side and from the rear patio by steeper steps.

The cottage has a lovely outside patio with tables and chairs which make the perfect place for a bit of al fresco eating looking out over the wonderful landscape. Children will love the freedom and outside space the cottage offers to run around and explore. There’s a lovely brook running through the back garden but small toddlers will naturally need to be supervised at all times.

Being so near to Llanberis, you are on the doorstep of so many wonderful places and things to do in Snowdonia. As we mentioned earlier, climbing Snowdon is on most guests itinerary and you’re only 10 minutes away from the start of the PYG track which if you have children in the mix, is definitely the route you will want to have a look at.

In Llanberis itself, you have the famous Llyn Padarn where you'll find lots of watersports on offer. The National Slate mine is also here where you can visit for free and learn how enormous and important the industry was to the area and the world. They also offer lots of workshops and crafty things to do. In the town itself, there are lots of places to eat and great shops to go and mooch around in.

15 minutes drive will bring you to Caernarfon where of course you have the castle along with a medieval town which again has some great places to visit including the harbour and marina along with the town centre where there are again some lovely places to eat and drink.

15 minutes in the other direction takes you to Bangor where you will find the Menai Bridge if visiting Anglesey is of interest to you. Bethesda is just down the road which is home to the first Zip World zip-line. If you've been tempted to give it a go, then now is the time!

In and around the area, there are plenty of opportunities for walking, climbing, running, cycling, kayaking etc - there are lots of good and reputable providers too should you want to take advantage of these things. It would be worth looking at the Llanberis Things To Do and Caernarfon Things To Do posts on our blog for a break down of everything on offer in the area.

House was superb. Kitchen well-equipped, everything clean & tidy on arrival. Front patio is a lovely place to sit and admire the view in the sun in the afternoon & evening. Only a 3 min walk from the petrol station shop and is within a 20-30 min drive from the majority of attractions in the area. Owners are very helpful with useful hints & tips re the best walks and places to go in the area. Plus we were kindly given some of their honey from the bee hives at the top of the garden. 10/10 would absolutely recommend.

A fantastic cottage in a great location!

Gareth was there to welcome us on arrival, and to check whether we needed anything. The cottage was obviously well cared for, and the basket of goodies that welcomed us was better than we’ve ever had anywhere else! The cottage had everything we needed – and we even coped without a dishwasher :).

The location was absolutely perfect – we had a day trip to Anglesey, frequent visits to Llanberis and Llyn Padarn, trips all over North Snowdonia (Aber Falls and Llyn Idwal / the Glyders were particular highlights!), and even to Betws-y-Coed for a ride on the Fforest Coaster! As others have said, it was a challenge fitting everything in and we’ll definitely be back to try and tick off those things we’ve missed!

Highly recommended!

We had a lovely stay in early April. The cottage was clean, well-equipped, and with stunning views of the countryside surrounding it. Location was perfect for exploring this part of North Wales, both in terms of attractions such as Zip World, several castles within easy reach, as well as lots of outdoor options and walking, including Snowdon. The bedrooms were a good size. Gareth and Majella had gone to extra lengths to make us feel welcome right from the beginning, with really good communication before our arrival, and lovely touches including the welcome hamper (much appreciated after a long drive with 3 kids), and even a little soft toy and book for our 2 year old, which they insisted we take with us when we left. Would not hesitate to recommend this cottage for families or adult groups.

What a wonderful cottage! Can’t recommend it enough. The perfect base for exploring many of the amazing sites of North Wales. Snowdon and Zip World are just around the corner, Anglesey and the powerboat rides down the Menai Strait and out to Puffin Island are only 15-20 minutes in the car, and the beautiful town of Conwy is a scenic ride away. The hosts could not have been more welcoming and thoughtful. We immediately felt at home in the cottage, which was beautifully furnished and had everything we could have wanted. Rooms are very comfortable and a good size. We never tired of the beautiful unspoiled views. Our two kids (11 and 14) appreciated the very reliable Wi-Fi, and a Texaco garage 5 minutes walk away was super convenient.

Lovely stay, house warm clean and welcoming and well equipped. Location great for views and for exploring Snowdonia. Owners very friendly and quick to resolve any issues and welcome package was very appreciated.

To echo everyone else, the cottage is fantastic, it’s well equipped and beautifully maintained inside and out.
Location wise, the cottage is perfectly placed and not far from any of the major touristy areas or supermarkets, even the nearby petrol station is well stocked with the essentials.
The owners are wonderful and were so welcoming, they took great care to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay.
The sunsets are definitely a highlight as is the honey the owners make.
We’d highly recommend this cottage and we’ll definitely be coming back next year!

Superb! We can only echo the sentiments of others – the house was extremely clean and well kept. The garden also with its views and babbling brook is a joy. You will feel at home as soon as you step inside. The owners are so helpful and friendly you’ll feel you’ve known for ages! The location is also wonderful, not only picturesque but situation perfectly for days out and sightseeing at the various interesting places nearby. It was truly one of the most enjoyable weeks we’ve had in a long time. We hope to visit again soon… just lovely.

Well situated, clean and spacious cottage that was comfortably furnished with thoughtful touches with the welcome package. The power shower is one of the best we have had in Wales. This is the perfect base for North Snowdonia. (A walk at Dinorwig is thoroughly recommended). The owners were very friendly and clearly take pride in their wonderful cottage. Thoroughly recommended for a relaxing break.
