A hidden gem in a remote mountain location | Pengwern

This hidden gem in a remote mountain location is perfect for anyone keen to get away from it all. Nestled in a quiet valley high above the popular market town of Bala this beautiful stone cottage is the definition of quiet tranquillity. A steep private drive through fields of sheep leads up to this idyllic Welsh cottage. We pass a small wooden shed (where the washing machine and dryer is located) onto the slate gravel drive. I'll come back to the view later but the front door leads us into an open plan ground floor living space.

This end of the room we have some lovely freestanding kitchen units. Simple clean lines dotted with quality fixtures such as the deep stainless steel sink and the cast iron gas hob. A reclaimed solid wood dining table sits to our left surrounded by traditional welsh country cottage chairs.

Slate floor tiles, complete with under floor heating, leads our eye down to the wonderful log burner sitting within the large inglenook at the other end of the room. The inglenook in turn is flanked by a brown leather sofa and matching armchairs. Carefully chosen ornaments and lighting enhance the rustic charm of this cosy space.

We turn back on ourselves to climb the painted white staircase up to the first floor. Straight ahead an oak ledge and brace door opens up onto a large bathroom. Clean white bathroom furniture with minimal fuss creates a space of simple elegance. A separate and large glass framed shower cubicle compliments a freestanding white ceramic bath sitting on marbled quarry tiles.

We cross the landing to the other end of the house to get to the bedroom. A central antique double bed is adorned with a modern mattress and sumptuous bedding. A dark wood chest of draws acts as a stand for a second flat digital tv and more storage space is afforded by a pastel set of drawers and simple clothes rail.

Location

The best thing about this hidden gem is of course the location. With uninterrupted panoramic views of the quiet valley below guests are sure to spend a lot of their time sitting on the small patio next to the lawn. With only the occasional curious sheep to disturb your summer BBQ.

There are dozens of footpaths and trails that can be explored right from your front door of course but if you do decide to jump in the car and explore the area the market town of Bala is probably the most obvious destination. A charming example of a welsh market town and a wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Fishing permits can be bought locally for Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) and the surrounding rivers. Sailing and windsurfing are other popular pursuits and white water rafting and kayaking can be enjoyed at the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre.

There are lots of small shops, cafes and restaurants in town as well as smaller independent activity providers.

Beautiful cottage. Well appointed. Stunning scenery.
Garden is completely dog proof which can’t be said for all holiday cottages that state enclosed garden.
It really is rural so no quick walk to the shop so do come prepared.
The roads driving towards cottage are narrow and at points look like no one has driven on them but the Google directions from Dioni email are perfect.
The drive up to the cottage from the road is very steep and a bit daunting on first sight but you get used it to it.
Rhug farm shop about 8 or 9 miles away does great meat.
We didn’t try the local Gilet Arms it’s about 3 mile drive away.

the total immersion in countryside, the green space was breathtaking – as soon as I parked and got out of the car it was a full on switch off … the ever changing light, shadow, bird song, just magical (also, the bed was super comfy and the bath to die for!). I would / will go back in a heartbeat

Pengwern is a lovely cottage, beautifully furnished, great views all round, only sheep and the odd farmer quad bike in the distance! The log burner is the best we have come across in Wales! A very comfortable and enjoyable, peaceful weekend, just what the doctor ordered! It was a little tricky to find but we got there and once we drove up the single drive it was worth it!
If you are looking for a break with no people, no cars and no noise then this cottage is for you. We will certainly return.

The cottage is in a beautiful location that is very peaceful; you can only ever hear the wind or the sheep!
The inside is very comfortable and warm, and the log burner helps make a lovely cosy atmosphere in the living room of an evening.
Outside, the garden is really well enclosed for dogs as long as all the gates stay closed, so it’s safe for them to be outside with you which is lovely, as many holiday cottages don’t have the same enclosed space so this was a bonus.
The owners are extremely helpful and kind; they offered advice on dog walking in the area and helped us get necessary supplies when we were taken ill over our holiday. It means a lot that the owners were so willing to help when we needed them, as it means you can stay there safe in the knowledge that someone local can help if you have a problem.
Really can’t fault this property; if you want to stay in the area it’s a great one to go for! A very lovely stay.

Wonderful location and a perfect place to be for morning runs/walks, to come back to after a day in the hills or to stay at home and enjoy the scenery. Very thoughtful welcoming pack. Our dog loved it (property itself well enclosed).

We absolutely loved this place and were blown away by the views. The cottage inside is spacious and the kitchen has plenty of room and is well-equipped. Everything was clean. We went for a run around the area and came across one car! Everyone locally was so friendly. We were not sure whether it is possible to heat the larger bedroom as my sister said it was not that warm in there. That was the only issue however and we would certainly go back there again. Would love to have stayed longer and to chill with the great selection of books and cosy sofas and throws.

Pengwern is a lovely property, comfortable, warm and well presented. It was a pleasure to come back and enjoy the log burner and comfy sofas whilst listening to the wind and rain outside. The secluded location is beautiful but a warning that the relatively local shops shut at 6.30 after that the nearest shop that opens later is in Betws-Y – Coed, which is 7 miles away.
So unlike us, it is probably a good idea to bring plenty of provisions so you do not have to wander around looking for a shop at 8.30pm, when is dark and pouring with rain…

We loved every minute staying at Pengwern. The cottage was just perfect. We loved its remoteness and the scenery from the garden was stunning, especially early morning and the sunrise, it was well worth getting up for. The cottage is well equipped and the wood burner makes it a very cosy place in the evening. Our dogs loved the enclosed garden and we had great weather so sitting outside with a glass of wine watching the farmer rounding up his sheep was incredibly relaxing. Brilliant holiday, we didn’t want to leave.

We had an absolutely wonderful week in this beautiful cottage. Stunning location, fabulous views, peace and quiet – absolute heaven!
We walked several miles every morning, along quiet tracks and footpaths and hardly saw a soul, returning to relax in this comfortable cottage. Highly recommended 🙂
