Ty-Mawr is an impressive detached self catering stone farmhouse in Llanuwchllyn just outside Bala in North Wales. This part of North Wales is very popular with adventure sport enthusiasts and hopefully you’ll find this cottage a perfect base from which to explore.

There’s a nice well equipped country style kitchen diner complete with a very attractive and locally crafted oak table. A modern oven and electric hob as well as a dishwasher, microwave, large double drainer sink etc are all included. The washer dryer is in the adjacent storage shed / extension. This storage shed is secure and there’s plenty of room in there for boots, bikes or even wind surfers.

Two leather sofas sit in a large comfortable lounge in this self catering stone farmhouse. The paintings that adorn the walls are by a locally renowned artist and depict the beauty of this rural area. The log fire is naturally very welcome after a day of walking in the hills or sailing across lake Bala. A large flat screen TV should help entertain when the weather might be against you.

A nice feature of this property is the second lounge or study next door. If you’ve lost the battle for the remote control you might like to retire gracefully to this area and read a book in front of a second warming log fire.

Only two bedrooms upstairs which may seem strange for such a large property. One twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a sofa bed in that study if you wanted to invite some extra guests however.

Both the bedrooms enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills and mountains of this rich and fertile part of North Wales. The curtains, linen and ornaments are all tastefully chosen and complement the cottage nicely.

I’ve left the best room till last. The bathroom is fantastic. It’s huge and dominated by a large freestanding roll top bath which looks out on that lovely view we talked about. There are of course no neighbours to worry about in this secluded self catering stone farmhouse. There’s also a separate walk in shower and a nice white bathroom suite.

Location

The village of Llanuchllyn on the southern tip of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is just over a mile away. The steam train that runs along the edge of the lake sets off from here. The village is also home the famous Eagle Pub. There’s a short cut across the fields back to the cottage, but don’t forget to bring a torch.

Bala itself is a 5 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. A wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Sailing, kayaking and windsurfing can be enjoyed on Bala lake with the help of Bala Water-sports and the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre is just on the outskirts of the village.

Sitting as it does on the Eastern edge of the National Park, this part of Snowdonia has the natural benefit of being easily accessible from the English road network. But seaside towns such as Aberdyfi and Barmouth are only an hour drive to the west. Similarly Snowdon is a little less than an hour to the North.

Ty-Mawr is a lovely well situated cottage for visiting North Wales.

The cottage is basic with limited crockery, cutlery (none of which matched), mugs (a couple are chipped) and glasses but it is very comfortable with a roaring fire and two sitting rooms it provides plenty of space. Though needed a dust.

The kitchen is spacious and is well equipped with fridge, freezer, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster and kettle. Plenty of good quality pans.

The bedrooms are of a really good size with plenty of hanging space for clothes and they are warm. The master bedroom needed a good hoover as it had quite an amount of long black hair on the carpet.

The bathroom has a lovely hot shower and roll top bath, which we unfortunately didn’t get the chance to use. The large radiator is a great place for drying swim wear after the hot tub.

The hot tub is a log burner which can take sometime to heat up using minimum 1 full bag of logs at a time with first lighting probably 2 bags.

The cottage is in a beautiful area with stunning scenery and the cows in the field are very friendly.

The owner is very helpful and supplies logs for the hot tub and fire. He is quick to respond to calls and popped by to check we had arrived.

A great week was had and we are thankful for a comfortable stay.

We had a lovely stay at Ty Mawr. The views are outstanding and the host was friendly and helpful. It was an excellent base for our planned activities, approx 1 hour drive away from each of the 3 nearby zip worlds. The train to Bala was nice, would also recommend a walk along the river and a mooch around the shops at Betws-y-coed. Then, of course, a lovely treat of a wood fired hot tub after a busy day. On a more comical note…we would also recommend the recovery service Robert’s and Thomas (based on the A5) and the garage in Bala Minafon who rescued us and fixed our broken driveshaft all in the same day so we could get on with our holiday where the RAC were going to take 11 hours just to get to us! (Don’t buy a T5!)

Myself and my wife have just spent a lovely 4 night stay at this beautiful and charming cottage with our dog Beau. This cottage has lovingly been restored by Geraint, the owner, featuring original features ie, wooden beams and beautiful fire places. Geraint popped in to see us on our first night to make sure everything was okay and generously left us a nice bottle of wine. Everything worked fine and surprisingly the WiFi was excellent for such a rural location. We were fortunate with the weather so had a couple of nice days on Barmouth beach which is fabulous which you can take dogs on during the summer months if you stick to the left hand side. Also the heritage train ride from the village to Bala along the lake is also a must which is also pet friendly. We also enjoyed the hot tub which was an added bonus! We couldn’t fault our stay at all, everything provided for a self catering holiday and would highly recommend for a pet friendly break and would definitely book again. Many thanks again Geraint for your warm hospitality.

The most beautiful cottage with stunning views and amazing grounds for our Labrador Obi to run around and thoroughly enjoy safely once all gates are shut, it’s fully secure.
We needed a quiet secluded break and this delivered perfectly.
Stunning walks behind and in front of the cottage, and Bala is a buzzing little town, and the lake is beautiful.
The one and only suggestion would be a coat/shoe stand in the front porch area.
Many thanks to Geraint and Wendy, you’re so lucky to live in such a beautiful area.

This was our first time with Dioni and at Ty Mawr and the whole experience was faultless. We had a nice welcome from Geraint when we arrived, lovely chap. The cottage was extremely clean and well equipped, very comfortable, wonderful bath, everything you needed (although I agree with a previous reviewer that coat hooks in the porch would have been really useful, but this is not a complaint). Fantastic garden, beautiful setting, we stood out most nights to listen to the tawny owls calling and to watch the bats, and in the morning we sat out and watched the birds with our breakfast. If you are a nature lover, this is a wonderful place to stay.
We were well looked after here, and we would recommend Ty Mawr as a great base for exploring North Wales –
we went to Portmeirion, Barmouth, up to the half way house on Snowdon, Lake Vrynwy, Bala, Harlech Castle, Coed Y Brenin for beautiful walks, and only regretted we didn’t explore the walks on our doorstep.
Thanks to Wendy and Geraint helping us out when we had car troubles – Tye Garage just down the road had us back on the road in a day. We crossed the road and took the bus in to Bala, and had some lovely walks. We can recommend a breakfast at Badell Aur Restaurant on Bala high street, great food, we went there a few times.
Thanks again to all for a wonderful stay.

We really enjoyed our short break at the cottage. Lovely, fully equipped kitchen. Comfortable bedrooms. Good location for exploring the local area. Barmouth is about 40 min drive, Llandudno just over an hour and lots to see along the route. Plenty of walking near by and Bala Adventure and Watersports Centre will rent a kayak or SUP to enjoy the water.

Reliable Wifi and Netflix was a bonus for our teenage son! There is a lovely seating area in the garden, perfect on a summer evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ty-Mawr. Gorgeous comfortable cottage that caters for all your needs. The cottage is literally home from home , the beds are very comfortable and the cottage is lovely and warm with the added bonus of two log fires . Cooking your own meals isn’t an issue as you have everything you need in the lovely kitchen. Wake up in the morning to gorgeous views and bird song . The cottage is an ideal base for exploring other towns/villages . Visited some fab places and completed gorgeous walks all within a 30 min drive . Lovely bottle of red was provided from the owner which was a nice touch . Our little dog loved roaming around the safe , secure garden which as a pet owner this is most important. Only used the hot tub once as takes a long time to fill and heat up with logs . Would highly recommend staying at this idyllic property it’s just perfect 10/10 .

Lovely cottage with all the amenities you need for a cosy few days away. Finding the cottage was really easy and there are numerous walking trails / biking trails a short drive away.
Would definitely recommend staying here

A beautiful cosy cottage with a warm welcome from the owners.
The cottage itself is very clean and equipped with everything you need, the mountainous view from virtually every window is outstanding and the hot tub is lush.
Plenty to see and do in the area or just totally relax and admire the view.
I have been to quite a few Dioni properties, all beautiful but this one felt like home.
Geraint and Wendy are lovely and I will definitely be back.
