Traditional Quarryman's Cottage in the Heart of Rugged Snowdonia | Wenallt

Traditional quarryman's cottage in the heart of rugged Snowdonia, Wenallt sleeps six with everything you need for a break away in the mountains. A quaint and cosy mid-terrace cottage original features throughout is a beautiful place to enjoy whilst exploring the local area.

As you come into the cottage, the combined sitting room and dining room are directly on your right. The original fireplace, as you would expect, is central to the room and the beautiful quarry floor tiles add so much character. At one end, the Chippendale style sofa and chairs add to the charm and make for the perfect place to relax after a day in the lakes and mountains. The dining room table and chairs positioned at the other end are in-keeping with the rest of the décor with plenty of space for you all to sit and enjoy mealtimes.

From the sitting room leads onto the kitchen where those quarry tiles are carried through. New, modern kitchen units and a butler sink, provide a great balance between the old and the new. The views from the kitchen window are incredible and if anything, you’ll be pulling straws as to who will be doing the washing up! Despite being small, as you would expect from a cottage of this era, there is everything you need to cater for your group. A back door leads you out into the garden.

Upstairs, on the first floor, there are two double bedrooms – both with stunning views looking out into the mountains. Wooden floors, traditional brass framed beds and the fireplaces (not in use) make them all beautiful rooms. A Victorian style family bathroom with shower and WC is also on this floor – again with beautiful views of the lake.

Through one of the bedrooms on the first floor, there is a flight of stairs that takes you up to a third double bedroom – this set up would be great for those with children as there is no door separating the rooms, only the stairs.

Location

The cottage comes with a back garden with a gate that leads directly on to the lake behind – Llyn Nantlle Uchaf. One of a few lakes in Wales and England where you can fish from boat for Salmon & sea trout. Boats can be hired from Cwellyn arms. If you have your own paddle boards or kayaks, bring them along as this you can use them until your heart’s content. There is a decking area with table and chairs which look out over the mountains. A utility room with bike and boot storage and access to the lake views to the rear is at the end of the garden where there is a washing machine.

In terms of what to do while you are here, where do we start! Based in Rhyd Ddu you are at the foot of Snowdon so you can walk up the Rhyd Ddu path straight from the cottage itself. Needless to say, other walking and climbing opportunities are aplenty and with very little travel involved to get to your starting point.

Towns and villages close by include Caernarfon where of course there is the castle along with an old market town with lots of places to eat and drink – the marina is a lovely place to sit and take it all in. Pant Du is the local vineyard where they make their own wine and cider and take you on tours of the vineyard itself. Bangor a little further along is where you’ll find Zip World and a much larger town for shopping etc as well as the Menai Suspension bridge which takes you onto Anglesey.

Llanberis where you’ll find the National Slate Museum, Electric Mountain and Llyn Padarn where there are lots of outdoor activities on offer. Beddgelert is a lovely place for more gentle walking flowed by an ice cream from Glaslyn Ices and mooch around all the craft shops.

Bigger attractions such as Surf Snowdonia are about 45 minutes away along with the Fforest Coaster which is situated in Betws-Y-Coed – home also to Swallow Falls and the Fairy Glen and if you’re not walking up Snowdon, you can get the train from there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Cosy and welcoming cottage with fabulous views and in such a great location to explore snowdonia. Very tastefully furnished in keeping with cottage character. Everything needed and more to make our holiday so enjoyable. Garden is definitely pet proof. Would we go again. Yes we would
