Cute One Bedroom Character Cottage with Sea Views | Yr-Hen-Efail

Near BeachReal Fire

An absolutely stunning property not to be missed, Yr-Hen-Efail is a cute one bedroom character cottage with sea views located in the heart of Harlech. This beautiful converted blacksmith property is split over two levels, combining original stone walls, wood panelling and glazing to create a contemporary space with a Scandinavian vibe. In the style of a log cabin that wouldn't feel out of place in the heart of a Finnish forest, Yr-Hen-Efail instead provides amazing views across the coastline of Bae Ceredigion (Cardigan Bay) from the first floor mezzanine.

Enter off the lane through wooden gates into a secret garden where a double door opens into the ground floor open plan living space of the cottage. The double height area reaches up to the pitch of the roof, with a half glazed mezzanine creating a light, bright room. To the right, the kitchen area is compact but provides enough space for a couple to cook at home if required. A fridge, dishwasher and stainless steel cooker and hob sit alongside wooden panelled storage cupboards in the kitchen units. A panelled splashback features open shelving for crockery and pan storage, and the wooden worktop includes space for a microwave oven and kettle. A solid wooden butchers block sits alongside the kitchen, providing additional preparation space if required. A wooden panelled door next to the kitchen area leads into the cottage's bathroom with corner shower cubicle, basin with vanity unit under and a WC. White tiles feature behind the units, which contrast beautifully against the exposed stone wall to the remainder of the room.

Separating the kitchen from the lounge area, a chunky wooden square farmhouse table with four seats provides space to enjoy breakfast and dinner. With oak effect flooring throughout the ground floor, the lounge area of property provides a comfortable space to relax in the evenings. A wood burner sits in the corner of the room on a slate hearth, providing a cosy warm atmosphere. The lounge features a plush fabric purple sofa with cushions and a throw, sitting opposite a Mexican pine coffee table and smart TV on a side table.

A set of wooden stairs lead up to the mezzanine level of the cute one bedroom character cottage with sea views. The mezzanine floor is a stunning space that takes up more than half of the cottage footprint. Built into the pitched roof, the chunky wooden beams of the structure are exposed as a design feature and the roof is entirely clad in wood panelling, adding to the log cabin feel. To one end, a raised platform acts as a bedroom, featuring a comfy double bed, bedside cabinet and lamp. A sky light above the bed provides the opportunity to gaze up at the stars on a clear night. To the other end of the mezzanine with a glazed partition to one side, a cosy nook features two comfy lounge chairs and side table, with a picture window located centrally in the stone wall, providing views out to sea. The sand dunes of Harlech beach lead the view out to Cardigan Bay and the Llyn Peninsula beyond. A stunning view and great place to relax with a glass of wine and to watch a spectacular North Wales sunset.

A separate door from the lounge leads into the property's stunning garden space. Steps lead down to a gravelled patio area with bistro table and chairs, decorated with plant pots. A pathway leads to a lawn area beyond the patio, with stepping stones passing a small pond. The garden is a wonderful space to spend some quiet time outdoors on a sunny day or evening.

Located on a quiet residential street in the heart of Harlech, the cute one bedroom character cottage with sea views is the ideal base for exploring the town, nearby coastline and mountain ranges of Southern Snowdonia. With lovely independent shops, restaurants and cafes, Harlech is a fantastic base for a North Wales holiday. A few minutes walk from Yr-Hen-Efail will take you to the town's most prominent landmark - Harlech Castle. The thirteenth century castle sits on a rocky outcrop on the edge of the town, providing breath taking views of the Bae Ceredigion coastline as well as views north to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the dramatic scenery that surrounds her. It's a spectacular spot.

Should you choose to walk to the beach, head down Ffordd Pen Llech - the second steepest street in the world with a 37.45% gradient. The beach is about a twenty minute walk from the town centre, but the reward is one of the most beautiful golden sand beaches in Wales, with a backdrop of huge sand dunes and crystal clear waters. Further south, the Wales Coast Path heads to the Morfa Dyffryn National Nature Reserve, with coastal wildlife and a network of pathways.

Venturing away from the coast, the Rhinogydd mountain range is only a short drive away. A quieter spot than the main tourist hotspots of Snowdonia, there are some fabulous mountain hikes such as Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach. Further afield, heading south, the seaside resort of Barmouth is a popular spot for visitors to soak up the charm of the town. A short drive north of Harlech leads to the Italianate village of Portmeirion which is a must visit attraction when in the area, designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925. For outdoor adventurers, Coed y Brenin Forest Park is the ideal destination for mountain bikers, being Britain's first purpose built mountain biking centre. There are also walking trails suitable for all. There's something for everyone in this beautiful part of North West Wales.

What an absolutely charming place!
Hen-Efail is in an amazing location with incredible views and Mark & Sue have ensured that they are visible as much as possible. The mezzanine bedroom means you can watch the sun set over the sea and is cosy and comfortable. The well equipped accomodation has everything you could need and the town is full of shops that supply delicious food though there are very good restaurants. Harlech Castle is 5 minutes walk and there is a choice of beaches close by. Our hosts were very welcoming and the accomodation is immaculate. A lovely place for a couple’s getaway and we would definitely go back.

This was such a unique find. We found it really homely, cosy and there’s a perfect spot to have couple of drink and watch the sun go down over the sea in the evening. The location was perfect to be able to stroll down to the sea. We also had a lovely cycle down to Barmouth where we then picked the train up back to Harlech.

We had a fantastic stay at Hen-Efail. The cottage is really lovely with everything that you need, lots of character and the view from the bedroom was amazing. We loved having a morning tea with views of the beach! Harlech itself is really nice and the cottage is in a good central location. The walk down to Harlech beach was a favourite for us. We will definitely be back!
