This pet friendly holiday cottage near Beddgelert is a great example of a stone built traditional welsh farmhouse. Located in the stunning Glaslyn valley the cottage is ideally located for guests wanting to explore both the rugged Eyri (Snowdonia) mountains and the beautiful sandy beaches of North Wales.

Turning off the Beddgelert to Porthmadog road we continue up a private drive to the front door of Dinas-Ddu. On entering we step left into the lounge. A large inglenook with the original oak lintel houses that all important log fire. Two leather sofas sit on a beautiful welsh slate floor looking out at the fantastic views to the front of the house.

The kitchen is back round to the right. Simple kitchen units with all the essentials included. An electric oven and hob, microwave, large fridge freezer and dishwasher are all there. A second spacious utility room houses a modern washing machine and tumble dryer. There’s also a convenient ground floor bathroom just of the utility room and access to a sunny rear courtyard.

From the kitchen we can continue through into the dining room. Be sure to duck your head, this entrance is quite low. The dining room beyond is a really nice space with white washed stonewalls with a stable door leading to the courtyard to the side of the house.

We have to walk back through to the entrance hall to go upstairs. As with a lot of old houses the stairs have quite a narrow tread. Anyone with mobility difficulties should take care when descending and make good use of the sturdy handrail.

The bathroom is immediately to our right at the top of the stairs. It contains a nice white bathroom suit and shower cubicle on a wood laminate floor. Top of the stairs and turn left we come to a long corridor with three bedrooms leading off. One twin room and two double rooms. All the bedrooms have spectacular views over fields of sheep grazing and out towards the famous Glaslyn river.

Location

Dinas-Ddu is set in a lovely private spot. Plenty of off road parking and a small but sunny gravelled area for seating and a larger lawn to the front. You may have to share the lawn with the odd stray sheep. The old stone pig sheds have also been renovated and provide dry and secure storage for guests with bikes or canoes etc.

Situated half way between Beddgelert and Porthmadog the property has a wealth of attractions and activities within a short drive. Beddgelert is a very picturesque village with a couple of lovely pubs and cafes etc and has long been popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Porthmadog is a larger harbour town and offers more shopping facilities including a medium sized supermarket. From here guests can drive a little further on to enjoy the sandy beaches at Borth Y Gest or Black rock Sands.

There are many activities and attractions in the area. The Glaslyn Osprey centre is within walking distance to the cottage. Once there you might like to jump onto the fantastic narrow gauge Welsh Highland Steam Railway at nearby Pont Croesor. A short car journey will take you the medieval castle towns of Harlech to the south or Caernarfon to the north. Other popular adventure centres include Zip World in Blaenau Ffestioniog, Coed Y Brenin Mountain Biking Centre near Dolgellau and Tryweryn White Water rafting in Bala.

We stayed at Dinas Ddu for almost a week over Christmas and had a wonderful time. We arrived just before dark on a cold windy drizzly day and found the cottage warm and welcoming, with lots of festive decorations. The cottage is so pretty, quaint and cosy. Looking at it from afar, it’s like a postcard picture. It had everything needed to really enjoy our stay. It’s in a peaceful location with lovely views from the garden which would be appealing in fairer weather conditions. It sits approx 5 mins drive outside of Beddgelert, which is an attractive village with a little shop and a lovely pub right on the river. It is walkable distance but there isn’t a pavement the whole way. The Aberglaslyn gorge walk is only 2 mins drive away. A beautiful walk but stretches that were challenging, not for those with mobility challenges. From here you can end in Beddgelert. The whole region was possibly the most beautiful place I’ve visited in the UK and it would be a pleasure to visit again.

Stay Date: Sep/Oct 24

Dinas-Ddu is a beautiful old cottage. We found the bedrooms very cosy, warm and the beds very comfortable.

The kitchen is very well equipped and was fine for our purposes. If we had to be slightly critical, for a cottage that is aimed to accommodate 6, a 2 slice toaster means that if everyone wanted toast, it would take a while to fulfil that. Maybe a 4 or 6 slice toaster could resolve this ‘inconvenience’ at little cost. Also, we have to agree with a previous comment that the fridge freezer is slightly awkward to access as the unit door opens to the left (and is restricted slightly by a radiator) and the appliance door opens to the right. Most fridge/freezer doors can easily be reversed to open whichever way one desires. Maybe this would possibly help the situation.

The bathrooms are OK and there was plenty of hot water at all times.

Sadly, some friends and family who were due to come and visit for a few days during our 3 weeks stay, had to cancel. We would say that the living room would be a tight squeeze for 6 – this feedback has been provided previously by guests.

The outside grounds are abundant, and the cottage is pleasantly located. We started seeing holes appear in the front garden area and to the r/h side grass area. We purchased a trail cam and captured both badgers and foxes on several occasions, so wildlife and nature lovers should love this cottage.

Again, we’d have to agree with previous comments made in relation to the cottage being ‘tired’ and it could do with a fresh coat of paint. However, we’d definitely stay again at Dinas-Ddu and hope to be back next year. We only make this comment as the Dioni website video appears to have been taken quite a while ago. Other comments that we’d make to hopefully assist others are:

• Broadband speed is excellent
• Superb private location
• Beautiful and rustic dining table
• Dioni’s video must be a good few years old
• Log burner not cleaned out – there didn’t appear to be any cleaning items e.g. metal bucket to negotiate this. Thus we didn’t use
• BBQ in the store shed was filthy – we avoided!
• Wardrobe space is abundant, but more draw space would be beneficial
• We personally wouldn’t describe the fridge/freezer as large as in the cottage spec
• We can’t comment on TV facilities as we never watch TV on holiday!

Great location just south of Beddgelert, and the self contained and large area around the cottage was ideal for the dogs.

Cottage is well appointed, especially the kitchen, and a minor plumbing issue was swiftly fixed.

We enjoyed our stay greatly.

A wonderful old Welsh cottage for four, the lounge may be a tad small for six adults. Comfortable and warm with hot water at all times. Facilities are a bit tired notably the tumble dryer and tv. The bathrooms need an upgrade, but served us well for a week. Very clean.

We were left a very generous welcome pack.

The TV facilities are too basic.

Maybe some ‘mind your head’ signs above doorways would help.

The grounds are wonderful, even though our spaniel managed to get under one of the gates I would say dog friendly for most people. It was lovely and quiet and out of the way.

There is no safe path to Beddgelert (if there is it is not accessible) from the cottage as stated in your booking details. This was disappointing.

The water may pass through UV light but it is very acrid, even the dogs weren’t fussed drinking it. We bought bottled water to drink.

I’d say with a few tweaks this is a perfect getaway.

Thank you for a lovely holiday!

What a nice place to stay. The rooms are great and well sized. Beds were excellent! A mirror at the end of the driveway would make the exit a lot safer!
It was great to have a washer and dryer. The fridge situation was a bit weird. Not well accessable
The wifi was good. The sofa could have been a different material for more comfort. The bathrooms were below standard though. No water pressure and the lack of tiles on the floor and walls made it feel dirty. Otherwise all good.

We had a wonderful stay at Dinas Ddu. The house and the spacious grounds are truly beautiful and in a perfect location if you enjoy trekking. There is a big Tesco about 10min away in Porthmadog and a friendly little food shop in Beddgellert. We slept very well and loved the super king size bed in the master bedroom. We do a lot of cooking and we found the kitchen to be well equipped. Having the laundry space was so useful.

I have to agree with previous comments and say the sofa really isn’t super comfortable. The addition of a guest book and a mirror to come safely out of the drive would definitely be helpful.

We were blessed with superb weather and we look forward to come back one day to this stunning area.

We loved our stay at Dinas-Ddu…What a great location between the coast and the mountains! The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed for cooking meals, the utility room was a great bonus for a young family with dogs. The garden was a lot of fun for our children to explore and secure for our dogs – although some of the lambs had figured out how to get under the gate so we had to chase them out everyday! Highlight has got to be the view from the picnic bench!
