Things to do on Ynys Môn (Anglesey).

Pick up an exhilarating RIB Ride from the town of Menai Bridge to enjoy a high-speed ride through stunning coastal landscapes, with a backdrop of the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia). Take your pick from a variety of tours, including excursions to see the seals and birdlife at Puffin Island.

At Beaumaris, walk along atmospheric battlements of the town’s 13th century castle ruins, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in the world. Don’t miss the Red Boat Ice Cream parlour in the centre of town for delicious artisan gelato.

Newborough Warren, at the southern corner of the island, is a very special place. Home to a superb pine forest with walking and cycling trails, and a thriving red squirrel colony. The forest pines run right down to a sandy beach with big views to Pen Llŷn. At low tide you can walk out to Llanddwyn Island with its population of wild ponies. There are some fascinating Celtic ruins to explore too.

Ynys Môn is a haven for wildlife The RSPB reserve at South Stack Cliffs, on Holy Island is a must visit for anyone who loves nature. It is a stunning cliff top location with resident guillemots, razorbills, choughs, and puffins. If you are feeling fit, walk down the 400 steps and across the bridge to visit the South Stack Lighthouse, and visitor centre.

If you fancy sharpening your surfing skills during your stay, head to Rhosneigr on the west coast of Ynys Môn. This laidback seaside village is home to a couple of surf schools where you can book lessons and hire equipment for surfing, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and kitesurfing.

There are many more family friendly attractions all over the island, including Anglesey Sea Zoo and Foel Farm near Brynsiencyn. Pili Palas near Menai Bridge, and Plas Newydd Stately Home near Newborough.

Off the beaten track ideas:

Discover local legends at Porth Padrig (White Lady Bay).
Park at the free car park near St Patrick’s church in Llanbadrig and follow the footpath down to the beach. You will find a beautiful crescent bay of sand and rocks framed by dramatic cliffs.

There is a huge white quartzite stack in the middle of the bay which is named after Ladi Wen, a Welsh folk legend who allegedly haunts badly behaved children.

The beach itself is named after St Patrick, who is said to have crawled ashore here after being shipwrecked on Middle Mouse Island, visible around a mile offshore. 

Visit ancient stone circles.
Ynys Môn has many ancient monuments that are worth a visit on your next trip. There are neolithic monuments at Barclodiad Y Gawres near Porth Trecastell (Cable Bay), and Bryn Celli Ddu at Llanddaniel Fab.

The atmospheric Din Lligwy Iron Age village, and Lligwy neolithic burial chamber are not to be missed.

Ynys Môn (Anglesey) is an island off the coast of North Wales, separated from the mainland of Wales by the Menai Strait. It is close to Eryri (Snowdonia) and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). You can cross the Menai Strait by car, using the Menai Bridge and the Britannia Bridge.

Is Ynys Môn (Anglesey) near Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)?

If you’d like to climb Yr Wyddfa during your holiday, Ynys Môn is perfectly placed for start points at Pen y Pass, around 30 minutes’ drive from Menai Bridge, to walk the Miner’s Track and Pyg Track routes. Head to Llanberis, around 20 minutes’ drive from Menai Bridge, to walk the Llanberis Path or to jump on board the Snowdon Railway to ride to the summit (end of March – October).
