Magical Character Holiday Cottage Near Criccieth | Llys-Derwin

Llys-Derwin is a magical character holiday cottage near Criccieth in North Wales. Built in the 16th century with the blood money of King Henry VIII in his effort to influence the nearby monastery the cottage is a fascinating combination of old world charm and modern comforts.

A tree-lined path leads us to the front door of this picturesque stone house. The front door of which leads us straight into a large lounge. An impressive inglenook fireplace dominates the space with big comfortable armchairs and sofa helping guests to relax in front of the warming flames at the end of an action packed day.

The adjoining kitchen is smaller but everything you need for a holiday is included. Oven, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave etc. and all the utensils and crockery that you’d expect in a five star cottage. Again modern fitted units and stainless steel appliances seem to sit easily with the 400 year old oak panelled dividing wall and deep set casement windows.

We have to return through the lounge and climb up a very exiting stone spiral staircase to get to the bedrooms. Children, young and old are bound to enjoy having their own bit of castle to climb before bed. Although, if you’re any taller than Dobby, you will have to watch your head.

There are two bedrooms upstairs. One double room and one twin room. Both bedrooms, like the rest of the house, are decorated in wonderful bold colours and littered with interesting antique furniture and fixtures. A large central landing also leads to the family bathroom at the far end of the house. A Victorian washbasin and wc is complimented by an enamelled roll top bath.

Location

The cottage is just on the edge of the village of Bryncir in North Wales. A sleepy village most of the time the place does spring into life on market day. This traditional farm livestock market is well worth a visit but try not to bid for any welsh black heifers if you can help it.

The village is located half way between the popular harbour town of Porthmadog to the South and the famous castle town of Caernarfon to the North. A 10 minute drive from the cottage will also take you to the beautiful beaches of Criccieth and a 5 minute drive in the opposite direction will bring you to the rugged mountains of Snowdonia.

Guests are encouraged to bring their bikes with them as there’s a lovely cycle path running along the river just 100m from the cottage. The more adventurous might also like to sample the numerous mountain biking centres that are doted around Snowdonia. Other traditional activities such golf, fishing, pony trekking and sailing are complimented by new attractions such as zip lining, lake surfing, gorge walking and kayaking. Plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

We had a fantastic few days at this gorgeous property. So peaceful I’m sure we will visit again. Even the weather behaved for most of the stay. Can thoroughly recommend The Goat Inn who also take dogs but you need to book. Mari was extremely helpful. The only thing I think I would say is that it would benefit from having towels included in the cottage as we had luckily got lots of clean dog towels as I forgot ours!!

We had a lovely time at Llys Derwin. Gorgeous character cottage with an enclosed garden and right by a cycle path that goes from the nearby garden centre, with cafe, in one direction, all the way to Caernarfon in the other. We loved the spiral staircase and the nearby pub is a bonus. It’s a great location for visiting North Wales. The hosts are super friendly and helpful.

The cottage was lovely and cosy and had everything you’d need equipment wise, especially in the kitchen. The kids loved the little forest at the back and the old stair way. My only critique would be is it was hard to shower and could do with a curtain or guard so as not to wet the bathroom.

We had a lovely weekend stay at Derwin Cottage. It was a very pretty, clean and well equipt accomodation. Everything we needed for a few days away with the dogs.
A beautiful sunny, quiet and enclosed garden with fabulous coastline within a few minutes drive.
The welcome cake and wine were a lovely touch.
We would certainly recommend this cottage and hope to return soon!

We had such a lovely stay at Derwin cottage, which is so characterful and well appointed. Beautiful garden and welcome pack appreciated. Mari was very friendly and attentive to any queries. It felt very peaceful and private and a perfect base to explore hikes in the Snowdonia area and surrounds. Highly recommended.

Lovely little cottage, beautiful location. We woke up daily with cow’s Moo:-)

The host was lovely, she came over and enquired if everything was ok. We had very tasty welcome cakes and a bottle of wine, waiting for us when we arrived.

There was lot of log wood in the room, we enjoyed the heating to the max.

Thank you so much to Rhys and Mari for a perfect place to stay this Bank Holiday weekend. The cottage was in the most picturesque, perfect location and the cottage itself is faultess. Perfect for a cosy weekend away. We have had the best time and the complimentary bottle of wine and cakes on arrival was very appreciated. I couldn’t recommend this cottage enough!
