A hidden gem in a remote mountain location | Pengwern

This hidden gem in a remote mountain location is perfect for anyone keen to get away from it all. Nestled in a quiet valley high above the popular market town of Bala this beautiful stone cottage is the definition of quiet tranquillity. A steep private drive through fields of sheep leads up to this idyllic Welsh cottage. We pass a small wooden shed (where the washing machine and dryer is located) onto the slate gravel drive. I'll come back to the view later but the front door leads us into an open plan ground floor living space.

This end of the room we have some lovely freestanding kitchen units. Simple clean lines dotted with quality fixtures such as the deep stainless steel sink and the cast iron gas hob. Recently added - a large fridge. A reclaimed solid wood dining table sits to our left surrounded by traditional welsh country cottage chairs.

Slate floor tiles, complete with under floor heating, leads our eye down to the wonderful log burner sitting within the large inglenook at the other end of the room. The inglenook in turn is flanked by a brown leather sofa and matching armchairs. Carefully chosen ornaments and lighting enhance the rustic charm of this cosy space.

We turn back on ourselves to climb the painted white staircase up to the first floor. Straight ahead an oak ledge and brace door opens up onto a large bathroom. Clean white bathroom furniture with minimal fuss creates a space of simple elegance. A separate and large glass framed shower cubicle compliments a freestanding white ceramic bath sitting on marbled quarry tiles.

We cross the landing to the other end of the house to get to the bedroom. A central antique double bed is adorned with a modern mattress and sumptuous bedding. A dark wood chest of draws acts as a stand for a second flat digital tv and more storage space is afforded by a pastel set of drawers and simple clothes rail.

Location

The best thing about this hidden gem is of course the location. With uninterrupted panoramic views of the quiet valley below guests are sure to spend a lot of their time sitting on the small patio next to the lawn. With only the occasional curious sheep to disturb your summer BBQ.

There are dozens of footpaths and trails that can be explored right from your front door of course but if you do decide to jump in the car and explore the area the market town of Bala is probably the most obvious destination. A charming example of a welsh market town and a wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Fishing permits can be bought locally for Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) and the surrounding rivers. Sailing and windsurfing are other popular pursuits and white water rafting and kayaking can be enjoyed at the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre.

There are lots of small shops, cafes and restaurants in town as well as smaller independent activity providers.

Wow…..If you’ve found yourself looking at this beautiful cottage, all I can say is just book it!! Myself, husband and two girls aged 7 and 10 stayed for two night. The most beautiful place to stay, so peaceful and literally nothing around you but sheep! Absolutely stunning inside, comfortable beds, a bath to die for…very much appreciated after a long day at work! Log burner was a dream, kitchen had everything we needed. We didn’t arrive until 6.30pm and it was extremely dark given we were in the middle of nowhere, but the instructions we were given when travelling down really helped. Signal is poor and we had no reception it we really don’t mind at all, WiFi works really well so no need to worry. Goodies that were left for us were also a nice little treat, thank you! We would most definitely return!

An amazing “self catering cottage”! One of the best! Pengwern is in a idyllic rural setting with outstanding views. The house has everything you need, plus very comfy beds! It is extremely clean! We could not fault it, only that we had to leave! The owner is very friendly and was quick to respond to any questions. We will definitely return and would highly recommend this “self catering cottage”. Thank you for an amazing stay, just the rest that was needed.

If you like the wilderness and are looking for a break from the daily grind, you have come to the right place. The surrounding landscape is impressive and the accommodation is so beautifully and tastefully decorated that you are reluctant to leave it again. Above all, the warm oven after a hike in the cold was great! If you travel there in winter, you have to expect snowfall and icy roads to the house. Next time, I would at least pay attention to winter tyres when booking a rental car. Thanks to Vicky and her team, however, we safely reached the main road and were able to reach our plane in time. Dear Vicky, Thank you again for your support!

My first but not last stay here. What a beautiful cottage. Very clean and warm. Very very quiet which is what I wanted for just me and my old doggo. The view’s are amazing. I recommend taking some binoculars. Good WiFi and a good smart TV with plenty of books and games. All in all a good holiday which I would highly recommend.

My friend and I had a really lovely stay at Pengwern with our small dog. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, the sofas were so comfy and the fire made the cottage amazingly warm. Both beds were really comfortable and the bathroom was lovely, spacious and wonderful to relax in. The only thing I would say to be mindful of is that pets aren’t allowed upstairs, so if you have a dog that usually sleeps with you this might be an issue. The location was stunning and the host got back to us quickly. Thank you Lyn and Vicky.

Our 5 night stay at the cottage was absolutely brilliant.. better than expected, The cottage itself is lovely, private and peaceful it was spotlessly clean and warm on arrival, the views are amazing and your situated on the top of a hill and all around you are just views and sheep. You have everything you need for your stay.. but if you wake up to snow as we did ( which was unbelievable an magical like a Christmas card scene) you may need a few more logs for the fire so make sure you bring some as the steep hills an single winding lanes can be a real struggle. The small fridge in the kitchen isn’t up to much probably needs replacing “tbh” as it barely chills your fresh food or drinks. We had to throw some away as it turned and im not complaining at all btw. We really can’t wait to return.. beds are very comfortable and shower was great.. overall it was absolutely brilliant stay an wonderful cottage. Excellent information and directions sent after booking. Thank you so much .

We had the most amazing week at Pengwern. Absolutely stunning location to get away from the chaos of daily life and properly relax. Our dogs enjoyed the garden and local walks. We met the neighbouring farmer who was lovely too. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, and even though the weather wasn’t great, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was so peaceful with only the sound of sheep, cows, and running water from the nearby stream. We are very grateful that the owner allows people to stay. If it was ours, we would never leave! We will definitely be back and are already planning our next visit!

This is the most amazing place. The location is outstanding and the cottage is comfortable and so easy to live in. Our dogs enjoyed playing in the enclosed outside space. We were blessed with two weeks of stunning weather and total peace.
