A hidden gem in a remote mountain location | Pengwern

This hidden gem in a remote mountain location is perfect for anyone keen to get away from it all. Nestled in a quiet valley high above the popular market town of Bala this beautiful stone cottage is the definition of quiet tranquillity. A steep private drive through fields of sheep leads up to this idyllic Welsh cottage. We pass a small wooden shed (where the washing machine and dryer is located) onto the slate gravel drive. I'll come back to the view later but the front door leads us into an open plan ground floor living space.

This end of the room we have some lovely freestanding kitchen units. Simple clean lines dotted with quality fixtures such as the deep stainless steel sink and the cast iron gas hob. A reclaimed solid wood dining table sits to our left surrounded by traditional welsh country cottage chairs.

Slate floor tiles, complete with under floor heating, leads our eye down to the wonderful log burner sitting within the large inglenook at the other end of the room. The inglenook in turn is flanked by a brown leather sofa and matching armchairs. Carefully chosen ornaments and lighting enhance the rustic charm of this cosy space.

We turn back on ourselves to climb the painted white staircase up to the first floor. Straight ahead an oak ledge and brace door opens up onto a large bathroom. Clean white bathroom furniture with minimal fuss creates a space of simple elegance. A separate and large glass framed shower cubicle compliments a freestanding white ceramic bath sitting on marbled quarry tiles.

We cross the landing to the other end of the house to get to the bedroom. A central antique double bed is adorned with a modern mattress and sumptuous bedding. A dark wood chest of draws acts as a stand for a second flat digital tv and more storage space is afforded by a pastel set of drawers and simple clothes rail.

Location

The best thing about this hidden gem is of course the location. With uninterrupted panoramic views of the quiet valley below guests are sure to spend a lot of their time sitting on the small patio next to the lawn. With only the occasional curious sheep to disturb your summer BBQ.

There are dozens of footpaths and trails that can be explored right from your front door of course but if you do decide to jump in the car and explore the area the market town of Bala is probably the most obvious destination. A charming example of a welsh market town and a wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Fishing permits can be bought locally for Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) and the surrounding rivers. Sailing and windsurfing are other popular pursuits and white water rafting and kayaking can be enjoyed at the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre.

There are lots of small shops, cafes and restaurants in town as well as smaller independent activity providers.

The cottage was a gem! Exactly as on the description, even better ā€“ a beautiful valley to enjoy long walks, a perfect home for a remote stay with a family of humans and nonhumans (we travelled with our dog and he had the best time in the enclosed garden, with lots of sheep to look at and only farms around ā€“ a true paradise). All the people we met were super friendly, from the neighbor farm to the staff at the local pub and the supermarket in the closest town (ca. 15mins drive). Don’t miss the amazing organic Rhug Estate Farm a little further for local delicious food! All in all a perfect for a writing/working retreat with fast Internet connection on average (though no phone reception at the cottage). We had a wonderful time and hope to be back!

Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. We stayed here for Christmas and had a magical time in this warm and well equipt cottage. The cottage was tastefully decorated for Christmas too, which was a really nice touch. Certainly one we will book again šŸ™‚

An absolutely stunning home and location. Very private but not too far a drive to get to surrounding towns. The home is extremely well stocked with kitchen equipment, linens, etc to make the stay very comfortable. I would highly recommend and hope to be back soon!

Our second trip to this cottage, equally as peaceful and equally enjoyed.

We had a lovely stay in the beautiful cottage, the views were amazing. It was lovely to sit in the garden enjoying the sun. Our dog loved running around. It would have been good to know beforehand that dogs are not allowed upstairs. Also there is a beautiful bath but there was no bath towels were provided.

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. The cottage is warm, it has everything you need and the beds very comfy (i normally get hip and back ache from different beds but not on this trip). There was a nice little circular walk from the cottage down a nearby bridleway. There are so many activities to do locally if you want an adventure. We tried coasteering, river bugging and Zipworld Velocity in addition to the walking.

We have just had a week in this beautiful, cosy cottage. If you are looking for a peaceful break in lovely accommodation with stunning views, Pengwern is definitely worth visiting. The cottage is very clean and well equipped, with everything you need for a comfortable break. The WiFi is excellent, especially considering the rural location and surrounding hills. The owners left a lovely welcome pack – thank you for this, it was very thoughtful. It’s lovely to watch the sheep and lambs close up, as they come right up to the gate and fence. Betws-y-Coed is only about a 20 minute drive, so nice and close to pay a visit. Our dog loved Pengwern too, the garden is completely enclosed so it was great to relax knowing he was always secure while we sat out in the sun enjoying the views. We would definitely return, it was very relaxing. Thank you for a lovely break.

This holiday cottage stay was just what we wanted, away from it all, peace and quiet. The cottage itself was lovely, clean and very well equipped. The large enclosed outdoor area was perfect for our two dogs. The weather was good to us and we had few walks around the area. Very cosy in the evening with just the odd sheep noise. We definitely recommend this cottage if you want a ā€œget away from it allā€ holiday. Looking forward to returning in the future.

Perfect holiday in a perfect dog friendly cottage. The cottage and location were amazing, exactly like the photos. Very easy to find following the instructions. Owner very nice and helpful regarding where we could walk with the dogs. Garden was enclosed and safe for our beloved pooches. Cottage was cleaned to a very high standard and felt just like home with everything you could possibly need. Views stunning even when the weather wasn’t on our side! No traffic at all apart from the post van and local farmer. We will definitely return.
