Tan-Y-Wenallt is a ‘ty unnos’ or ‘one night house’. An ancient and well known tradition here in Wales. During the 18th century, a time of rapidly expanding population and poverty, it was generally agreed that a property could be built by squatters on common land so long as it was built within 24hrs, one day and one night. The test being that smoke had to emerge from the chimney before sunrise the following morning. The occupier was then allowed to claim a portion of the surrounding land. The boundary being set by the distance he could throw an axe from the new house.

There are many examples of houses of this type dotted around Snowdonia. The most famous being ‘Ty Hyll’ or ‘Ugly House’ near Betws Y Coed. The original crude construction giving this house its name. Tan Y Wenallt, as was often the case, has been much improved subsequently however. It’s most resent renovation transforming it into a truly idyllic and luxurious holiday cottage.

The house is a great mixture of old and new. The dining room has a large table which sits eight very comfortably. The fitted kitchen boasts a large range cooker, oak units and granite worktops. The kitchen is slightly elevated which allows the chef to oversee what’s needed on the table or, more importantly in our case, to check who is and isn’t eating their greens!

The bright and spacious conservatory overlooking the garden provides another option for eating. The kids will have more opportunity to hide their green beans in here however.

The lounge, in contrast, is much more oldy worldy. Which is exactly how I’d want it. Whitewashed stone walls, giant oak ceiling trusses and inglenook fireplace creates an historic ambiance. The luxurious sofas, the tick of an old grandfather clock and the warmth of a real fire calms both body and mind.

Luckily, once you’ve woken up from your slumber in the lounge the bedrooms aren’t too far away. Two bedrooms on the ground floor. One with a double bed overlooking the garden and one with a set of bunk beds. Both share a ground floor toilet. Upstairs there are a further two rooms. A large twin room with fantastic views over the extensive garden and the master bedroom with a king-size double bed. The main bathroom up here has a lovely free standing roll top bath.

Location

Tan-Y-Wenallt has a fantastic large and sprawling garden. The original owners must have been good axe throwers. Full of mature trees, large shrubs, fragrant rose bushes and heavy clematis, the garden is a fantastic place to explore.

Tan-Y-Wenallt is only a short walk from the pretty village of Llanbedr. First stop is Ty Mawr, a traditional welsh pub serving local ales and beer. A little further on is a second pub, The Vic, which has a fantastic beer garden on the banks of the river Artro. There’s also a grocery store/newsagents in the village.

The beach is probably a little too far to walk if you’re carrying a Lillo. But Shell Island and other fantastic sandy beaches are only 5 minutes away in the car.

If you are a keen walker however, Cwm Nantcol, Cwm Bychan and the Rhinog Mountains are all right on your doorstep. Enough wildernesses to keep even the most enthusiastic walker satisfied.

As well as castles, narrow gauge railways and historical mines, Snowdonia is also famous for all it’s adventure activities. A quick search on Google will help you find white water rafting, kite surfing, rock climbing, mountain biking and others, all within easy reach.

Our stay was the first week of April and we were very happy with this lovely cottage, the beds were comfortable and this an issue I’ve had with many of our stays in other cottages.
The kitchen was well equipped, all the rooms were lovely and spacious and the garden is simply beautiful.
The area is of course stunning, I’ve stayed in and around Llanbedr countless times and it never disappoints, there is something for everyone, whatever the weather.

Another absolutely perfect week at Tan y Wenallt. Thanks so much to the owners for letting us stay again at what has become our family happy place over the last 8 years. Such a beautiful place.

Lovely quaint cottage. Very well fitted out and with plenty of seating, both inside and out.
Lovely garden and we enjoyed the fresh peaches from the peach tree which were so juicy and tasty .
Thank you for all the little extras and the welcome basket .lovely fresh bed linen and fluffy white towels.Kitchen was very well equipped, only thing missing was a bread bin/container which would have been useful.
Our only criticism was the smell of dogs in the bunk bedroom which really was bad especially having the door closed on it at night. We tried opening windows ,spraying febreeze around to no avail.
We had a most enjoyable holiday in a lovely area, so thank you .

A beautiful and comfortable cottage. The garden was an unexpected highlight – so many areas to explore and relax in! The cottage itself was wonderful to stay in, and there was plenty of room. A great base for a range of attractions, and if you don’t fancy going far, the Victoria pub and Ty Mawr hotel both do great food. There is also a well-stocked handy shop in the village.

Thank you to the Davids and Sue Abrahams for your comments. The issue with the wet dog smell has been resolved with the removal of the rug in the living room. We are glad you had a nice holiday and enjoyed the garden.

The cottage is really lovely, very spacious and in a great peaceful location. The garden is amazing with so many places to sit and just be! We were particularly grateful for the shade provided by all the mature trees as we picked the heatwave week. Large barbecue which we used every night. Great walks from the cottage and the quiet end of Harlech beach 5mins drive away. Couple of gripes …. there is a very strong smell of dog in the sitting room which is now mixed with Febreze. We are dog owners although didn’t take them with us on this occasion and we wouldn’t have been able to sit in there for any length of time. The kitchen could also do with some serving dishes.

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks. The over riding memory for us was the peaceful setting. The only sound was sheep and the galloping horse in adjacent field. We adored the garden…best we’ve ever had. So many hidden places to sit and relax in amongst all the well established shrubs and flowers, and 2 ponds too! The house was roomy and comfortable and fitted out with everything we needed. The only niggle we had was, as animal lovers but not dog owners, the smell of wet dog in the lounge was powerful and remained for the whole 2 weeks, which was a shame.

A lovely spacious cottage in a great rural location under the wooded cliffs at the back of the village. A perfect blend of ancient and modern, properly equipped for those of us who like to cook, and no sign of chintz anywhere! Walks straight from the door, and fabulous long empty beaches for dog walking just minutes away. The lush garden is a bonus – we were constantly finding new places to sit and read or simply kick back with a glass of wine. Great log burning stove too. We’re a family of four adults with a big dog, but we can totally see how two families could enjoy this home without getting on top of each other, no problem. Highly recommended for a peaceful getaway.
