Ty-Mawr is an impressive detached self catering stone farmhouse in Llanuwchllyn just outside Bala in North Wales. This part of North Wales is very popular with adventure sport enthusiasts and hopefully you’ll find this cottage a perfect base from which to explore.

There’s a nice well equipped country style kitchen diner complete with a very attractive and locally crafted oak table. A modern oven and electric hob as well as a dishwasher, microwave, large double drainer sink etc are all included. The washer dryer is in the adjacent storage shed / extension. This storage shed is secure and there’s plenty of room in there for boots, bikes or even wind surfers.

Two leather sofas sit in a large comfortable lounge in this self catering stone farmhouse. The paintings that adorn the walls are by a locally renowned artist and depict the beauty of this rural area. The log fire is naturally very welcome after a day of walking in the hills or sailing across lake Bala. A large flat screen TV should help entertain when the weather might be against you.

A nice feature of this property is the second lounge or study next door. If you’ve lost the battle for the remote control you might like to retire gracefully to this area and read a book in front of a second warming log fire.

Only two bedrooms upstairs which may seem strange for such a large property. One twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a sofa bed in that study if you wanted to invite some extra guests however.

Both the bedrooms enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills and mountains of this rich and fertile part of North Wales. The curtains, linen and ornaments are all tastefully chosen and complement the cottage nicely.

I’ve left the best room till last. The bathroom is fantastic. It’s huge and dominated by a large freestanding roll top bath which looks out on that lovely view we talked about. There are of course no neighbours to worry about in this secluded self catering stone farmhouse. There’s also a separate walk in shower and a nice white bathroom suite.

Location

The village of Llanuchllyn on the southern tip of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is just over a mile away. The steam train that runs along the edge of the lake sets off from here. The village is also home the famous Eagle Pub. There’s a short cut across the fields back to the cottage, but don’t forget to bring a torch.

Bala itself is a 5 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. A wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Sailing, kayaking and windsurfing can be enjoyed on Bala lake with the help of Bala Water-sports and the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre is just on the outskirts of the village.

Sitting as it does on the Eastern edge of the National Park, this part of Snowdonia has the natural benefit of being easily accessible from the English road network. But seaside towns such as Aberdyfi and Barmouth are only an hour drive to the west. Similarly Snowdon is a little less than an hour to the North.

Lovely little cottage perfect for the two of us and the dog. It has all the facilities we needed and is super cosy with the log burner going in the lounge. Initially thought it might be noisy as the road is quite close but it wasn’t at all. The road is not that busy and doesn’t get any HGV traffic and is really quiet after dark. The wood fired hot tub is a fantastic way to relax after a long walk.

Such a beautiful house, garden was lovely and big and fenced off which the dogs absolutely loved. Great location, all the great walks at the very most an hour away. Would definitely book again!

Greta place to stay if you’re looking for peaceful and quiet relaxation. Hot tub was great and bath in bathroom was gorgeous.
We struggled to locate the rural road that’s straight off the main road to the cottage but Geraint came to meet us straight away and helped us to the cottage.
Geraint was always there if we had any questions and thank you for the lovely wine which was a lovely treat.
Top tip to know – the big supermarkets do deliver to the cottage so we had a Tesco delivery scheduled for an hour after we arrived.
Thanks so much for having us it was fantastic.

Had a wonderful week here to escape fireworks night with the dog and explore some of the local area. Hosts were super responsive, friendly and helpful. Had everything we needed and the house was warm and cosy. The hot tub was an added bonus – takes a while for it to heat up in winter but it retains heat quite well overnight and was lovely to get back from a day of hiking and fire it up and hop in an hour later. Lots to do locally and shops and pubs not too far away as well.

Had a fab few days at this very dog friendly cottage. Loads of space surrounding the cottage, plus a big and secure paddock for them to run around. Footpath behind the cottage, leads to a quiet single road for a 30 mins walk to YrcEagle pub, which has a small shop. 10 min drive to Bala, loads of friendly pubs. Hot tub great, took about 6 hours with a fair bit of attention to get up to temperature. Neighbouring cows fascinating. Heating in house great, loads of storage space. Will return, thanks Geraint.

Ty Mawr was so welcoming and comfortable that I almost want to keep it a secret. The house was full of charm and character, extremely well appointed and positioned in a glorious setting with ample landscaped gardens, safe for the dogs. We were extremely comfortable and found the beds to be just right. The splendid claws foot bath has a glorious mountain view! We appreciated the welcoming bottle of wine from the owner as well as Dioni’s efficiency.
