Embracing Autumn: Reasons to Visit North Wales This Season

Published on 17 Sep 2024 by Amy Greenwood

Autumn in North Wales is altogether different from the busier summer months, but there are many reasons to visit during this spectacular season: stunning scenery bathed in vibrant colours, crisp fresh air, and fewer crowds, are just part of what makes autumn an ideal time to visit this wonderful area.

If we’re lucky, September and October will still bring dry, sunny days – perfect for venturing outdoors. Autumn transforms the already stunning landscapes of North Wales into a palette of fiery reds, golden yellows, and rich browns. From the forests of Eryri (Snowdonia National Park) to the coastal cliffs of Anglesey and Pen Llyn, nature puts on a spectacular display. Spots like Betws-y-Coed, Llyn Padarn, and the amazing Bodnant Gardens, are particularly striking during this season, offering photographers and nature lovers a dream backdrop.

Escape the Crowds

One of the greatest perks of visiting the area during autumn is the relative peace and quiet. While summer brings an influx of visitors, autumn offers a more laid-back experience. Whether you’re exploring charming coastal villages or visiting popular landmarks such as South Stack, or Caernarfon Castle, you’ll enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere with fewer visitors around. This season is perfect for those seeking to unwind, escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and connect with nature. At this quieter time of year you might also have a better chance of spotting wildlife, from Anglesey’s red squirrels, to migrating birds, and dolphins and seals along the coast.

The cooler autumn temperatures are ideal for outdoor activities, particularly hiking. Climbing peaks such as Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) becomes more comfortable without the summer heat – or crowds – and the crisp air and peaceful surroundings make longer walks more enjoyable. Thrill-seekers can still enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing, and zip-lining, with the added bonus of fewer people.
