Fitness Challenges North Wales 2019

The weather has finally broken through and we are in full flow of spring. For those of you that are more ‘fair weather’ athletes, if you have been contemplating whether or not to compete a fitness challenge, it’s certainly not too late to get involved. North Wales plays host to a number of 5K’s, 10K’s, marathons, half marathons, duathlons, swimathons and walking events… you name it, it’s here. The difference for the events taking place in Snowdonia to those in other places is the incredible landscape that you get to use – beautiful lakes, stunning forests, beaches and of course dramatic mountains. A world heritage site is usually in the mix too! So if we’ve managed to wet your appetite further and you’re up for taking part, here is a list of the remaining fitness challenges North Wales 2019…

Gold Rush | 13-04-19

Set in Coed Y Brenin, this is a trail run around the Gold Rush Trail which is 8.5km. It’s a great way to start and get into the swing of things as entry is £3! There is plenty of things to do there for supporters, including of course mountain biking!

The Harlech Triathlon And Duathlon | 14-04-19

Set in the beautiful coastal town of Harlech, this event is much loved. Including a run along the beach, it finishes off its grand finale with a run up the castle steps. There is lots going on in the castle during and after for spectators. There is both a triathlon and duathlon running on the day.

The Roc | 27-04-19

This is an endurance race starting in Abersoch to the summit of Snowdon… and back! Start with a 1.5km swim in the sea, a 50km bike ride to Snowdon. Run to the summit of Snowdon and then return with a 1km run on the beach to the finish.

Sunrise On Snowdon | 27-04-19

A trek up Snowdon for sunrise is magical and a once in a lifetime experience. On the 27th April, Breese Adventures are arranging a guided walk where you’ll experience a full moon and of course sunrise to follow.

Slateman Triatlon | 18-05-19 & 19-05-19

This is one of the most iconic triathlons to take place in the UK. A swim in the lake, followed by a bike ride around the Snowdonia National Park and a run through the quarry – this is tough, but incredible. There are four distances that you can choose from and there is a option to run as a relay team too if you want to get one together.

Blue Moon Snowdon | 19-05-19

In conjunction with the Autism Directory, Breese Adventures are taking a guided tour up to the summit of Snowdon under the glow of a blue moon. After taking in sunrise at the top, you will descend in time for breakfast.

Abersoch 10K | 01- 06-19

A very popular event that takes place in the fantastic seaside town, Abersoch on the Llyn Peninsula. A run around the town and the beach makes it a great day and there is lots happening on the day to keep supporters entertained.

Anglesey Trail Half Marathon | 02-06-19

New for 2019, this is a half trail marathon or a 10K trail run around the beautiful Newborough Forest on Anglesey. A fantastic one to do if your new to these things as one great thing about Anglesey is that it is flat!

Salomon Trail Marathon 15-06-19

Heralded as one of Wales’ finest trail circuits, there is a full and half marathon. Running through the beautiful running trails of Coed Y Brenin Forest, the scenery is truly spectacular. Lots to do on site for those with lots of supporters and spectators in tow.

Snowdonia Challenge | 28-06-19, 29-06-19 & 30-06-19

This is a walking challenge to complete 100km over 3 days. Take the challenge on your own or as part of a group. It is challenging and will take you to parts of the Snowdonia National Park that you might not otherwise see. A great way to take part in something if running, swimming or cycling just isn’t your thing.

Abersoch Triathlon | 29- 06-19

There is an olympic race (1,500m Swim | 40km Bike | 10K Run) and a sprint (750m Swim | 20km Bike | 5km Run). Again, taking place in the wonderful town of Abersoch, the race includes running on the beach, swimming in the sea and a bike ride around the Llyn Peninsula.

Snowdonia Trail Marathon | 14-07-19

There are four events in total, including the Ultra, Full and Half Marathons along with a 10K. This is not for the faint hearted, but the sense of achievement will last you a lifetime. The various routes are all focused around Snowdon starting from Llanberis and there is lots going on in the village during the events for those going to support.

Snowman Triathlon | 27-07-19 & 28-07-19

Held over 2 days, there are a number of events that take place. The Snowman Legend is for those elite athletes amongst us and includes: Distance: Swim: 1,900 metres, Bike: 91 km, Run: 21 km. The Duathlon is a sprint run and includes: Distance: Run: 2.4km; Bike: 31km; Run: 5km The Snowman Swim includes either a 1 mile or 0.5 mile lake swim They also hold junior versions of the events if you want to get your younger ones involved.

Ultra Trail Wales | 10-08-19

Starting at Coed Y Brenin, you will make your way through Dolgellau and onto Barmouth. This 80km race is iconic and challenging. Along the way you’ll get to see some of the most beautiful parts of the country – it really is one for the bucket list.

Trail 10K Wales | 01-09-19

Set at Coed Y Brenin, this is a 10K morning run through the stunning forest. At £20 entry fee, this is a great event to get your teeth into the racing calendar.

Sandman Torch Light Trail | 14-09-19

Night running is becoming quite the things these days. This is a 10km and 5km through the Newborough Forest on Anglesey at night with head torches. Again a great one to do if you are new to the table with an added challenge of running by torch light.

Sandman Triathlon And Duathlon | 14-09-19 & 15-09-19

Again, held over 2 days, there are a number of events that take place and a less brutal version of the Snowman…. no mountains involved. Sandman Legend includes: Distance: Swim: 1,900 metres, Bike: 91 km, Run: 21 km. Sandman Duathlon is a sprint race and includes: Distance: Run: 2.1km; Bike: 25km; Run: 5.5km There also junior versions of the events on this event too.

Abersoch Half Marathon | 21-09-19

A stunning course with views across Cardigan Bay, Snowdon and Bardsey Island. A stable event in the Abersoch calendar, there is a bar and live music on the beach for your post race entertainment!

Snowdonia 24 Challenge | 21-09-19

Another walking (you could run if you wanted!) challenge where you need to complete as many laps of the 10K trail in Gwydyr forest as you can in 24 hours. Do it individually or as a team. The 24 hour timeframe will certainly test your mental endurance.

Petzl Night Trail Wales

A challenge set against the clock. It is a 4km route at night in Coed Y Brenin Forest. Not too technical, it’s a great run and the aim of the race is to see how laps you can complete in 3 hours. You can run as a group too, each member must complete at least 1 lap. The ending is a party where you’ll find a DJ, and hot food.

Trail Betws | 09.11.19

Including a half marathon, 10K and 5K, this is a beautiful trail run in and around the incredible Betws Y Coed and Gwydir Forest. It is challenging due to the variant of terrain, but it’s very popular for lots of age groups.
