PORTMEIRION FESTIVAL NO 6

Published on 26 Aug 2014 by Gwion Llwyd

Portmeirion Festival No 6 is coming to Snowdonia for the third year running and is set to be the best yet. The festival has made the Daily Mail’s the top 10 UK Festivals as well as being voted Best New Festival and Best Small Festival.

It is magical – hard not to be when the location is Portmeirion Village in North Wales. Clough Williams-Ellis created this little piece of the ‘Italian riviera’ in wales during the earlier part of the 1900 – a true visionary. A visit here transports you to a fantasy world of beautiful buildings and gardens.

So what is it all about? They say its an intimate, bespoke weekend of music, arts and culture….it doesn’t disappoint. This year sees the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, Kellis, Beck and Nineh Cherry take to centre stage and the DJ line up is pretty good too with legendary Laurent Garnier, nordic disco king Todd Terje, the mighty Julio Bashmore.

Arts and culture is an integral part of the festival. Illuminated bands, parades and carnivals can be seen throughout the weekend. The surrounding woods and village buildings come alive with a unique series of inspiring venues; everything from buskers, secret raves, pop up parties, foraging and storytelling. Unique performances from award-winning authors, poets, actors, filmmakers and artists. The cinema is an awesome addition too for those want a little time out.

Portmeirion Festival Number 6

An ‘outlaws’ camp for children where they learn den building, camp songs, face painting, arts and crafts along with a 9am cinema viewing for those up early. No 6 is the only festival that has its own carnival in which children can be part of (pre-booking required).

There is also a pretty mean offering in the way of food – pie and mash, churros, pulled pork sandwiches, ‘game’ served street style, thai curries, slow cooked BBQ salt meats ….The Goodness Gracious Health Foods company are there to cover the vegetarian options and a Welsh produce market is on hand. This is fast-food at its healthiest where using fresh, wholesome, and where possible local ingredients is top of the list – whoo hoo!!

If you just want to spend a day there, DIONI have some great self catering accommodation close by so you can have a taste of the action followed by a good nights sleep and a warm bath. I think most of them are booked now but here are our self catering holiday cottages in the area.

HOLIDAY COTTAGES : CRICCIETH  –  HOLIDAY COTTAGES : PORTHMADOG

The festival is from 4th-7th September and full weekend tickets start from £180 – children 10 and under go free.
