There’s nothing like spending time outside in North Wales. Whether it’s the magnificent mountain scenery of Eryri (Snowdonia), or the dramatic rugged coastline along the Llwybr Arfordir Cymru (Wales Coast Path) you’ll be sure to build up an appetite after getting out into the fresh air. So, next time your heading out on a dry spring or summer’s day, a crisp autumn or winter’s day, pack yourself a picnic blanket as we take a look at putting together a picnic with yummy treats from local Welsh producers.

Picnics have been popular for centuries. The enjoyable tradition of eating outdoors with family and friends has been long lived, and continues to be popular to many age groups. Whether it’s at a beach, in a beautiful local park or in a stunning mountain range, a picnic can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose (or how much you are willing to carry, of course).

North Wales has some of the best food and drinks producers in the business. There are a long list of companies that will supply all the tasty treats you need for a fabulous picnic on your North Wales break.

When putting together a picnic with yummy treats from local Welsh producers, we’ll focus on some of those staple goods that make the basis for a good picnic, as well as some indulgent treats that we all deserve once in a while. Here’s a look at some of our favourites.

The best picnic foods from Welsh producers

Snowdonia Cheese:

With thirteen different wax covered, handcrafted cheeses there is something for everyone from the Snowdonia Cheese Company, located in Rhyl. Why not try the new addition to their range – Rockstar, a vintage cave-aged Cheddar that has been matured deep in the slate mines of Snowdonia.

Henllan Bakery Bread:

A fresh crusty loaf is a must on a picnic. One of North Wales’ most popular bakeries, Henllan Bakery based in Denbigh provide a superb range of breads as well as pies and pasties, crumpets and cakes. You’ll find their products available widely across North Wales. 

Edwards of Conwy Pork Pies:

A proper butcher and deli based in the medieval town of Conwy, Edwards have been in business for over 35 years. They provide award winning produce, using only the best ingredients. As well as fresh meats and poultry, they have a great deli range of cooked meats including pork pies and sausage rolls.

Dylan’s Chutney:

With three coastal restaurant outlets in North Wales, Dylan’s have become a hugely popular dining destination over recent years. They’ve recently opened a shop in Menai Bridge, dedicated to selling their own produce. From ‘dine at home’ meal kits, pizzas, soups and wonderful range of sauces and condiments, pick up one of their fabulous jars of chutney to compliment the cheese.  

Tregroes Crackers:

You can’t have cheese without the crackers. West Wales based Tregroes provide the option of Savoury, Rustic or Cheese Crackers which will enhance any picnic hamper. For those with a sweet tooth, grab a pack of their superb Waffles too.

Tan y Castell Welsh Cakes:

No Welsh picnic is complete without Welsh Cakes. In fact, no visit to Wales is complete without Welsh Cakes. Tan y Castell Bakery based in Pembrokeshire supply their tasty Welsh Cakes to a number of large retailers nationally, but you’ll also find them in small independent stores. If you’ve never tasted a Welsh Cake, it’s a cross between a cookie, a scone and a pancake.

Jones o Gymru Crisps:

Pwllheli based Jones o Gymru are the go-to brand for Welsh crips. They can be found in many retailers across the country. Using Anglesey’s Halen Môn for flavouring, they produce a range of crisp flavours as well as popcorn.

Siocled from Melin Llynon:

Born out of the 2020 lockdown, Melin Llynon in Anglesey adapted their business model to produce a range of their homemade chocolate. Siocled, having a quirky Willy Wonka vibe, with some bars containing Copper Tickets to win prizes. Siocled is now available in a number of delicious flavours that shouldn’t be missed.

Fantastic drinks from Welsh producers

Gwinllan Conwy Solaris:

With a great reputation and award winning wines, Gwinllan Conwy have a vineyard on the outskirts of Conwy. Here they grow a variety of grapes to produce some of the finest tasting wines that Wales can offer. Perfect for a picnic in North Wales, Solaris is their flagship white wine that has won national and international awards. It’s has a zesty, fruity and crisp finish.

Wild Horse Beer:

With their beers stocked in many shops and bars in North Wales, Llandudno based Wild Horse Brewery have a superb range of beers. These can be found in cans and bottles, as well as on tap in many bars and restaurants. Perfect for a summer picnic, their popular Buckskin is a fantastic pilsner style lager that is refreshing and full of flavour.

A flask of Poblado Coffee:

Coffee lovers are in for a treat when they visit North Wales, with a fabulous range of local producers and roasteries. Based in Nantlle on the edges of Parc Genedleathol Eryri, Poblado Coffee are a fantastic Artisan coffee roaster. With a great range of single origin and signature blend coffees on offer. Fill up a flask and enjoy a fantastic Welsh coffee when gazing out at the magnificent landscape around you.

Panad Gymreig:

Top tip – when a Welsh person offers you a panad, they’re offering you a cup of tea, or a cuppa. So, what better for your Welsh picnic than a Panad Gymreig, or a Welsh Brew? With standard teabags, decaf and range of flavour infusions there’s a warm drink to suit everyone. Perfect for a chilly autumnal picnic.
