Snowdonia Style Adventure | Sailing

Published on 10 Jun 2016 by Gwion Llwyd

Sailing in the North Wales doesn’t get as much of the lime light as other adventure activities, but with all of our beautiful coastline and the abundance of lakes it’s a pretty good place to learn and a great activity for the whole family to get involved in. Here are our top 5 places you can learn to sail.

PLAS MENAI | CAERNARFON

Located in-between Bangor and Caernarfon, Plas Menai is the National Outdoor Centre for Wales. They offer both beginner and intermediate sailing courses on the sheltered coastal waters of the Menai Strait. Under the guidance of their highly qualified instructors, all the courses are run to the guidelines of the RYA.

BALA SAILING CLUB | BALA

Situated at the Bala sailing club on Llyn Tegid and surrounded by the Snowdonia mountains, this is a stunning place to learn to sail. They offer both level 1 and 2 RYA courses which take place over 4 days. Once qualified, they hold races and weekends for you to compete in at the club.

ABERSOCH SAILING SCHOOL | ABERSOCH

Working in association with the South Caernarfonshire Yacht Club, the school is based on Abersoch main beach and you are really in the centre of Abersoch life here. RYA certified, they offer a variety of beginner to advanced courses for dinghies, keelboats and powerboats. They also offer specific tailor made lessons for adults and children from age 6.

CMC | LLANBEDR

The Christian Mountain Centre is based in between Harlech and Barmouth and set on Pension Harbour, 5 mins from the beach. They offer RYA sailing courses 1 and 2 for both individuals and families as well as up to level 2 in powerboat. The centre is a great place for a number of other activities for family fun.

DOVEY YACHT CLUB | ABERDOVERY

The yacht club offers up to level 3 RYA sailing courses as well as race coaching, powerboat courses and safety boat courses. The club is sited as one of the best located yacht clubs with stunning views over the Dovey estuary. The club also offers a great social events calendar throughout the summer months.
