Traditional Welsh Farmhouse In The Mountains | Maes-Y-Cwm

Maes Y Cwm is a four bedroom traditional Welsh farmhouse in the mountains. It is everything that you would expect from a rural farmhouse escape. Inglenook fireplace, check. Exposed beams and original features, check. Big open kitchen diner, check. Stunning views of the Snowdonia landscape, check. Based on the Llyn Peninsula, only 15 minutes from Caernarfon and 10 minutes from Pwllheli, it is perfectly positioned to enjoy North Wales.

Driving up to this holiday cottage gives you a warm feeling that you are going to enjoy some peaceful time away in a beautiful house and location. A traditional farmhouse with modern interiors is a great combination and the owners of Maes Y Cwm have really finished this renovation off to a very high spec.

You come into the house through the huge and inviting kitchen. White units with grey marble worktops give it a modern feel. The wooden farm style kitchen table and chairs along with the inglenook, rocking chair and sofa make it feel cosy and inviting. Lots of space and all modern appliances will make catering for the group a pleasure whilst on holiday! A separate utility room come boot room houses a washing machine and dryer.

Leading off from the kitchen is your quintessential farmhouse sitting room. A huge inglenook fireplace with log fire takes centre stage with lovely leather sofas and french windows looking out onto the beautiful views that surround the cottage. There is a TV in here so it’s certainly a lovely place to relax in the evening.

There is a bathroom with a wet room style shower, WC and washbasin. All beautifully finished with modern appliances and a white and stainless steel colour way.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms. Carpeted throughout, all the rooms feel very cosy and table colours used throughout make them all very inviting whilst retaining a modern and calm feel. Along with the two doubles, there is a single and triple room. The triple is made up of 3 single beds and is a lovely room with its apex ceiling and exposed beams. There is another family bathroom on this level which has a shower over bath set up, WC and washbasin.

Location

The cottage has a wonderful private garden which looks out onto the incredible landscape beyond; mountains in one direction and the sea in the other. There is plenty of space to eat outside and if you have children in the mix, they will have lots of fun exploring the area.

In terms of what there is to do in the area, you are really well positioned to explore both the north coast and the Llyn Peninsula. Pwllheli is your nearest town. A lovely harbour market town - plenty of lovely places to eat and drink and if you are into sailing, Plas Heli would be on your list of things to do.

Nearby is the Glasfryn Parc. Two great places to visit for wakeboarding, SUP, karting and lots of other great outdoor activities. There are also lots of beautiful beaches and hidden coves along the north side of the Llyn Peninsula and Abersoch is further up where of course you'll find the popular village where surfers flock throughout the summer. Criccieth is 10 minutes away from where the award-winning Dylan's is located and certainly worth the effort to visit, especially on a summer's day.

Heading in towards the mountains, Caernarfon is only a 15 minutes drive away where you will find of course the castle and a lovely town where the new harbour has some great restaurants, cafes and bars. From here, a 20 minute drive will take you into the Eryri (Snowdonia) villages and towns where you can enjoy the mountains and lakes.

Fantastic space nestled into the mountains for some incredible weather and views. Incredibly well located to loads of great towns nearby and the perfect peaceful space after a big day out. The kitchen is well stocked and quality items and it’s fitted to a high spec. This isn’t a basic holiday let and much more towards the premium side. The mattresses are some of the best we’ve slept on. The house is naturally on the colder side which we were fine with but could be a good point for other people. You can also hear a lot through the walls and floors which is something to think about if travelling with children who have naps or go down early for bedtime.

Some additional ideas, A much bigger wooden chopping board in the kitchen would be ideal. Maybe some sort of door or stair gate added to the landing like at the bottom of the stairs for the safety of children.

All in all a lovely stay and we managed to check in early and be greeted by the wonderful hosts and their dog.

Very peaceful and the views were stunning. Lovely cottage beds comfy. Everything we needed but the only downside is it is not suitable for anybody with mobility problems, particularly the stairs at the top difficult to transfer from staircase to landing. Also the different level from lounge to kitchen via open doorway quite dangerous on my first night I fell onto hard floor from steps bruising knees badly. Fine for young ones.

We had a great time at Maes-Y-Cwm, the property is fantastic, really well decorated and equipped and has great views, lovely garden areas and the place is so peaceful.
The owner, Elaine, couldn’t have been more helpful and I have to say we have stayed in many places over the years and she was the most communicative, accommodating and lovely host that we have ever encountered. Also thanks to Dioni, they seem to be a really well run and genuine company that we will continue to use, thanks to all.

A huge thank you to Elaine and Arwel for making our family Christmas so special. From Arwel kindly lighting the fire for our arrival, the special touch’s of supplying and decorating the beautiful Christmas tree and making the whole house so cosy and inviting. The cottage and location is stunning, with views and walks to match. All the little touches like the welcoming pack and bottle of bubbles were hugely appreciated. I can honestly say the best ever holiday rental cottage I have stayed in. Thank you

A very small and hopefully helpful comment, the eye level kitchen cupboard door closing mechanism that holds the door open, seems to release on its own accord. Unfortunately one of the glasses got broken because of this. Our apologies. Please let us know what the cost is to replace it. Thank you

Lovely house and gardens. Well equipped and located. We had a lovely time with beaches, food and places to visit all easily accessible. Hosts were very supportive when we couldn’t work things out (like heating). Welcome pack was very welcome after a long journey. Highly recommended.

Our holiday could not have been better. The cottage is beautiful, thick carpets, fluffy white towels, comfortable beds, everything provided to cater for a wonderful holiday.
It is quite secluded with plenty of space to roam and enjoy. On Arwel the owners advice, we walked on a warm evening to a lovely spot to enjoy the sunset.
It’s well worth visiting Yr Eifi car park about 10 minutes away to walk down to Caffi Meinir which takes about 25 minutes. The views are stunning, on the day we went the sea was a deep blue and the sun was shining, it reminded us of the Mediterranean: a little bit of paradise!
