Making Your Property Dog Friendly
Published on 18 Apr 2025 by Amy GreenwoodIf you accept dogs, make sure they are truly welcome. ‘Dog friendly’ should mean exactly that – guests need to know that their beloved pets are not just allowed in your property, but are genuinely welcome.
A well thought out dog-friendly approach can set your holiday let apart, attract repeat bookings and earn valuable reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Provide the Essentials:
Consider a small doggy welcome pack with a bowl, treats, and waste bags. Include local vets details in case of emergencies.
Create a Safe and Secure Space:
A secure outdoor space is a top priority, so ensure gates and fencing are in good condition. Inside, create a designated sleeping area by placing a cosy dog bed in the corner of the kitchen, or near a radiator in a utility room.
Set Clear House Rules:
It’s important to set house rules. Clarify whether dogs are allowed upstairs, or on furniture, if they should be on a lead outside, and any other key rules. Keeping rules clear yet reasonable helps avoid misunderstandings.
Think Practically:
Think practically – choose hard floors that are more durable and easier to clean than carpets; ensure rugs are washable, and provide throws or removable sofa covers to protect furniture and offer peace of mind. If dogs aren’t allowed upstairs, consider a stair gate for convenience. If possible, add a sink to your back porch or boot room, and provide a couple of doggy towels for muddy paws.
Highlight Dog Friendly Activities :
Guests love personal recommendations. Leave a list of local walks, dog-friendly pubs, beaches, and attractions. These small touches show that you care and will be appreciated by guests who are unfamiliar with the area.
Make Cleaning Easy:
Even well-behaved dogs shed and bring in dirt. Invest in a good vacuum and provide a small supply of pet-friendly cleaning supplies for guests to use.
We hope these tips help! We’ll be back next month with more ways to make the most of your holiday cottage.
